The Aura and Legality of Mini Bikes • Ask any motorbike enthusiast as to how they picked up their passion for the lean machines and the chances are that they will tell you that as kids they cut their teeth and picked up the finer points of riding on mini bikes. If you fall in this category, you might be now zipping down highways in a high-powered and swanky motorcycle but can you forget the mini bike of vintage make covered with a plastic standing in one corner of your garage? • Mini bikes occupy a special and nostalgic place in the hearts of most adults who grew up riding one. Mini bike parts for the old generation of mini bikes that have long stopped production like the Alexander Reynolds, fondly known as ARCO, are difficult to find. While OEM replacement mini bike partsfor these bikes are almost impossible to get, the ingenious find a way out by designing and creating the parts required from the same materials in local workshops, if not only to keep their favorite mini bike in running condition.

Most states in the country permit mini bikes to be ridden on the sidewalks provided there are safety accessories like horns, mirrors, headlights, and brake lights. In California and Texas, even this is banned. However, in all states, you can ride a mini bike on private lands, designated racetracks and dirt tracks, and designed fields. This is why, most pictures of mini bikes, past or present show these little bikes charging over fields or on racetracks. Riding a mini bike on the roads or highways is not allowed in any part of the country.

To know if riding a mini bike is permitted in your state, contact the local Department of Motor Vehicles to be sure of the law. • Mini bikes for decades have been manufactured in various designs and specifications and the launching of new models has always been an annual exercise among the leaders. This is why bodywork in mini bike partshas been so important. Making major updates every year on existing models is not always economically viable. Instead, a tweak of a fender, reshaping a gas tank, or simply tinkering slightly with the frame is enough to bring in a new model.

  4. Further, in many cases, mini bike partshave been standardized across makes and models of a manufacturer. Take the XR100 model of Honda launched in 1979. Every year, Honda tweaked something but kept the critical mini bike partsas they were. The same bike, renamed the CRF100, was introduced with a single shock, electronic ignition, and new gas tank. Now, both the XR100 and the CRF100 are on the roads with the mini bike partsof one compatible with another. • Almost all mini bike partstoday are available as OEM replacement parts.
