Group Work. Aim of the Session. To go away with practical tips that you can use right now in class. Questions – and the way they are asked. Make them more provocative by using stems such as: Could it be that . . . ? How can i t be that . . . ? I wonder whether . . . ?

  2. Aim of the Session • To go away with practical tips that you can use right now in class

Questions – and the way they are asked • Make them more provocative by using stems such as: • Could it be that . .. ? • How can it be that . .. ? • I wonder whether . .. ? • How would we find out . . . ? • Do you think . . . ? (or even) Do you really think . . . ? • What do you think (person) would say if …? • What would happen if . . . ? • Would you expect . . . ? Why would you expect . . . ? • Why, on Earth, does. . . ? • What’s it all about when . .. ? • etc.

  4. Organising grouping and seating • Friendship? • Random • Pair talk • Pairs to fours • Snowball • Spokesperson • Listening triads • Envoys • Rainbow groups • Jigsaw groups • Use of formal ‘debate’ roles – next session

  5. PAIR TALK:1 with 2, 3 with 4 etc.

  6. PAIRS to FOURS:1 with 2, 3 with 4Then 1 with 2 with 3 with 4

  7. SNOWBALL:1 with 2, 3 with 4Then 1 with 2 with 3 with 4 and add something newThen join two groups of 4 and add something else new etc.

  8. SPOKESPERSON:1,2,3,4 discuss an answer etc. Person from each group feeds back group opinion e.g. what they agreed/disagreed on. Spokesperson not told in advance so they all have to be prepared to feedback

  9. LISTENING TRIADS:1 and 2 discuss, 3 listens/notes agreed points. Then roles change – say 2 and 3 continue discussion and 1 listens. All given chance to feedback to each other on points made.

  10. ENVOYS:1,2,3,4 discuss answer to problem set to whole class by teacherThen 4 summarises outcome to 5,7,8 (and they to her), 6 summarises to 9,11,12 etc. Envoys return to carry ideas back again etc.

  11. RAINBOW #1:1,2,3,4 discuss answer to problem set to whole class by teacher

  12. RAINBOW #2:New groups!

  13. JIGSAW #1:1,2,3,4 discuss answer to problem set to their group only.Each group has different area to focus on.

  14. JIGSAW #2:New groups! Each new group now has an ‘expert’ on each topic and brings final idea together.

  15. Organising the room. Thick about how and where you are going to position your groups…

  16. Grouping: changing pre - determined groups quickly… • Number/Letter/Colour - signs kept on desks • Pupil just has to remember that they are, say: 1, B, Blue. Teacher tells them “Get into your Numbers/Letters/Colours for this activity”. • Can move mid-activity, or at start of each lesson as needed.
