  5. Warm – Up (Day 2) • What is a covalent bond? • How could you tell apart the name of a covalent compound vs. an ionic compound? • Determine if the compound is ionic or covalent • Diphosphorous pentoxide • Aluminum oxide

  12. Covalent Bonds • Formed by sharing of electrons between atoms • Typically between two or more nonmetals • Ex. CH4

  13. Covalent Bond Properties • Low melting and boiling point • Poor conductors

  14. Covalent Bonds • Electrons are not always shared equally • Two types of covalent bonds PolarNonpolar

  15. Polar Covalent Bonds • When one atom is more electronegative than another, the shared electrons spend more time around it • Example: H2O

  16. Nonpolar Covalent Bonds • Electrons are shared equally • Both atoms have similar electronegativities • Example • N2

Naming covalent compounds • For the first element, use the full name of the nonmetal with a prefix denoting how many atoms of that element • If there is only one do not use the prefix • For the second element change the ending to the suffix –ide, use a prefix to denote how many atoms that are present • Examples • SO2 – Sulfur dioxide • P2O5 Diphosphorus pentoxide • PCl3 – Phosphorus trichloride

Stations Directions • One half of the class will complete the Covalent Bonding Webquest. • Visit the link on the worksheet to answer the questions • No more than 3 people should be at one computer • The only website you are allowed to be on is the webquest • The other half of the class will begin with me and practice writing covalent formulas and naming covalent compounds • we will complete some practice worksheets and review them together • You will complete one station today and one station tomorrow
