Introduction Diversity a personal view Class discussion: How can you benefit from knowing about knowing about the differences raised in the last exercise ? • A very good starting point when looking at the concept of diversity is to look at yourself, your family and your friends. • Answer the following question on your own: • What are the nationalities of your friends and family? • What music do you like? • What is your favourite food? • What language can you or your family/friends speak? • What and how do you celebrate in your culture?

Introduction • You will also need to recognise when individuals are being treated unfairly, to challenge such mistreatment and help those who are mistreated. • Diversity should be recognised and celebrated and it is important to support individuals diversity when working in health and social care settings.

  7. Discussion Task • You will need to split yourselves into 7 small groups of 2 or 3 students, • You will randomly pick out a topic from the box and will need to 5 five examples demonstrating how your topic has benefited from diversity. • E.g. – the arts have benefited from diversity has it enables us through films for examples to learn about different cultures.

Assignment 2.1 – P1 Task • P1 – Explain the concepts of equality, diversity and rights in relation to health and social care. • Create a glossary of the wide range of key terms associated with equality, diversity and right – get some inspiration from the unit content hand out if struggling. • Create an A3 poster identifying and explaining the 7 key aspects of the care value base.

Care Value Base – a definition • The care value base are the seven principles which put the individual at the heart of health and social care provision. • These principles essentially form what is called the “value base” and should form the basis of all your relationships with service users and colleagues.

What are the principles ? • Promotion of anti-discriminatory practices, • Promotion and support of dignity, independence and safety, • Respect for, and acknowledgment of, personal beliefs and an individual’s identity, • The maintenance of confidentiality, • Protection from abuse and harm, • The promotion of effective communication and relationships, • The promotion of personalised (individual) care.

  12. The principles continued … • Together these principles can essentially be broken down into the following key concepts: • Inclusivity, • Access, • Trust, • Confidentiality, • Choice, • Participation, • Honesty and openness, • Respect, • Safety.

Independent Study • Using the materials provided and the computers available it is time for you to get started on your task P1. • Feel free to use the information provided to you in the last two lessons and which are available in the book as well as Book 1 pages 48 – 65. • Also make use of the care value base PPT prompt questions.
