  2. Last Year Before Isaac The circumcision The three visitors Destruction of S & G Sarah given over to Abimelech God saves Sarah Birth of Isaac

  3. Of Sarah, 1 Peter 3.1-6 In the same way, you wives, be submissive to your own husbands so that even if any of them are disobedient to the word, they may be won [apart from the word, to practice obedience] by the behavior of their wives, as they observe your chaste and respectful behavior. And let not your adornment be merely external--braiding the hair, and wearing gold jewelry, or putting on dresses; but let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the imperishable quality of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is precious in the sight of God. For in this way in former times the holy women also, who hoped in God, used to adorn themselves, being submissive to their own husbands. Thus Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord, and you have become her children if you do what is right without being frightened by any fear.

  4. As Abraham moves closer to Isaac’s birth, God’s appearances intensify God’s appearances to Abraham: In Ur, form unknown; at least a voice 12.7, “appeared” form not described, at least a voice 13.14, by voice 15, God spoke to Abraham in a vision 17.1, appearance – God “went up from” Abraham 18.1, appeared as a man 75 yrs. 99 yrs. These last two, within months about 30 yrs. since first calling

  5. Statements Common to chs. 17 & 18 chapter 17 chapter 18 v. 21, Sarah will have a son at “this time next year” v. 14, at this time next year, Sarah will have a son v. 17, Sarah, 90, very old to give birth v. 11, Sarah old, past child-bearing v. 17, Abraham laughed, not believing Sarah could bear v. 12, Sarah laughed, not believing she could bear

  6. Sarah’s Failing Trust and God’s Kindness to Restore Her Sarah’s Experience She was always esteemed by God as Abraham’s wife. Like Eve and Mary, she is a mother of the promised Seed. Abraham set her up to pose as his sister to protect himself. She had to know WHY God called Abraham. God attacked Pharaoh to protect Sarah Pharaoh restored Sarah to Abraham Sarah knew the promise of a Seed Ch. 15 surely renewed her hope in a child. } she must have had a powerful desire to have a child

  7. By ch. 16, at 75 yrs. old, Sarah has given up her dream of bearing children. Even her plan with Hagar backfired. She can neither have children biologically or by law. In her heart God has blocked natural child-birth and legal adoption. Ch. 17, Abraham laughs at God’s promise of a biological son. Sarah, at 89, has also lost hope in God’s promise. Her name change and promise of “kings of peoples” is like salt in a wound. At least Abraham has fathered a son and has the sign of circumcision; she has only promises, must pretend to be Abraham’s sister, and has suffered the humiliation of going so far as to give her husband to another woman to get a child. In ch. 20, she is a co-conspirator with Abraham. trials have overwhelmed her trust

  8. The Purpose for this Visit: To ask Sara, “Is anything too difficult for the LORD?”
