  1. BOURGAS

  2. LOCATION • The city of Bourgas has a population of almost 200,000 people according to recent data, and is the second largest city at the Bulgarian Black Sea coast. It is also the fourth largest city in the country, following Sofia, Plovdiv and connecting Varna.

  3. It is situated in the farthest western part of the Bourgas Bay and 390km east of Sofia. Due to the low level of the coast in the area, three lagoon-lakes (the Atanassovo, Bourgas, and Mandren lakes) lie in the area surrounding the city.

  4. Surrounded by the coastal Burgas Lakes and located at the westernmost point of the Black Sea, the large Burgas Bay, Burgas has the largest and most important Bulgarian port. Today, it is a key economic, cultural and tourist centre of southeastern Bulgaria, with the Burgas Airport serving the resorts of the southern Bulgarian coast.

  5. MONUMENTS • The Black Sea on the one hand and the southern part of the region, which is occupied by the low bordermountains - Strandja, Dervenski Hills and Sakar mountain, on the other hand, are attractive for many tourists every year. Another interesting touristic sights are the Ropotamo river and Arkutino reserve. The biggest tourist complex is Sunny beach, and the modern holiday villages are Elenite and Duni.

  6. The Burgas region as a crossway of nations and cultures has a centuries-old history. There are many architectural and archeological relics of Thracian times /the Pomorie Tomb/, of Roman and Byzantine times /fortified walls, Roman baths/, historical monuments from the first and second Bulgarian state, architectural and ethnographic places of interest from the National Renaissance - museum towns Kotel, Nessebar, Zheravna, Sozopol etc. Another group of anthropological tourism resources are the religious objects- Christian churches, monasteries, museums.
