Why incorporate sustainability into the planning process and plan documents? • Triple bottom line • Benefits to your college (especially financial)

How? • Flexible and general content that can be adapted to the various planning processes at different colleges • Provide specific examples of how sustainability has been incorporated into Illinois community college plans (template sustainability language) 4. Provide CONTEXT and HOPE • Empathize that this is a complex and difficult effort that many higher education institutions are struggling with • There is not a standard, nor should there be – each institution has individual needs • Close with examples of achieved success and why this is important for their future success

Next Steps – Survey? • Obtain additional master and strategic plan documents from Illinois community colleges • Ask the college to identify location of sustainability language (if it exists) and rank the plan as Awakening, Piloting, or Transformed • Gather examples of financial benefits of sustainability implementation at IL colleges • Gather information about planning processes at each college • How often are plans updated (requirements?) • Can they integrate sustainability assessment as a checkpoint on annual updates? • Obtain a listing of consultants/contractors who work with each college to develop plans.
