  3. A bit about myself • Publication in magazines, journals, books over 25 years • Reviewing experience for journals and book publishers • Editorial experience for peer-reviewed journals • Co-editor of British Journal of Social Work • Own PhD by publication

  4. Setting priorities • Completing PhD on time MUST BE #1 PRIORITY • Publication while undertaking PhD not essential • Consider the costs/benefits of publishing before completion • Take supervisors’ advice on board (almost invariably would be co-author[s])

  5. Relationship between PhD and academic publication PhD is a publication in its own right, but expectation that it will result in additional publications – with supervisor(s) as co-authors [nb one criterion on which PhD examiners are normally required to comment]

What to get published and when Publication while PhD in progress Make use of formal (internal and external presentation opportunities) – most likely possibilities: lit review; methodology; ethical issues Publication following completion of PhD Publish entire thesis in book form Publish peer-reviewed journal papers; chapters for edited book(s)

  7. How to get your work published Need to grab editors’/reviewers’ attention: • Emphasise what is new about your work • Use a reader-friendly style - don’t over-intellectualise/make your writing over-academic
