Summary • Paul is on leave which means he is away from the war for 17 days. • Mittelstaedt is making Kantorek look bad because of what he did when he was a teacher in military school.
Summary • Kantorek is appointed to scout leader for a skirmish. -skirmish is a minor battle. • Kantorek is the one who made Joseph sign up which got him killed.
THEME • Abusive Authority figures • Kantorek abused his power of being a teacher, he took it to far ( making people sign up who didn’t want to.) • “Territorial Kantorek, do you call those buttons polished? You seem as though you can never learn. Inadequate, Kantorek, quite inadequate.” • In school Kantorek used to chastened Mittelstaedt with exactly the same expression.
Paul's feelings • Paul asked Mittelstaedt to polish Kantorek up. • Paul is liking the fact that Mittelstaedt is using his power as payback for what Kantorek has done to everybody. • Paul feels really bad telling Kemmerich’s mom about his death because she doesn’t want to believe her son is dead.
