Grid Computing: Lessons Learned • Systems Engineering and Requirements Analysis • Understand your requirements! • Top-down requirements analysis • Concept of operations, Use Case and Workflow Analyses • Where will your system architecture benefit from Grid Technology? • What data systems benefit from grid technology? Maybe not all? • What are the critical resources that you require to share? • You may not need to implement all Grid technology elements • You may need monitoring, but not discovery • Do you need to incorporate legacy systems? • Incremental development and implementation • Technology changes so fast; large monolithic systems are obsolete by the time they are deployed • Build and Deploy in stages • Build only what you need for the near term and plan for growth • Leverage Grid Concepts and technology change to your advantage 5

Grid Computing: Lessons Learned • Grid Project Management Issues • You are building a Virtual Organization • The headaches can be geometrically more complex • Working Group structure similar to IPTs may be helpful • Who agrees to share what resources? • Cross IT domain issues and policies • Approval policies and timelines • Involve the decision makers in defining policy • Identify cross organizational entities and individuals who need to buy-into or approve processes or implementation • Systems Admin and Grid Admin • New staff or additional training for existing staff? 6

Sharing • To say that Grid Technology enables the sharing of resources is to say that Grid Technology enables a new level of competition for and protection of resources. • This is not only computational resources, but all resources associated with the grid infrastructure, e.g., people, funding, security, political dominance.Sharing is diametrically opposed to the "corporate culture" of many institutions. • How can we overcome this cultural inertia? • (Catherine Schulback of NASA CoSMO has an interesting briefing on this.) 7

More Thoughts on Grid Management • Bottom-up vs. Top-down ManagementOpen-ended Grids vs. Enterprise Grids • Enterprise-class grids are necessary step on the way to The Grid (w/ capital G) • Nobody set out to deploy "The Internet“ • It just grew • We have the notion of "The Grid", but the chances that we can monolithically deploy it are nil • The Grid is not a monolithic entity • It is a collection of services and capabilities • Bits and pieces will be deployed and used in constrained environments 9
