  3. Vincent Van Gogh was a Dutch painter who was born in the Netherlands in 1853. He died 37 years later in 1890. He had many different jobs and was very poor. He often went without food so that he could buy art supplies.

  4. Van Gogh was never famous whilst he was alive. He sold all his paintings to his brother Theo. Theo only managed to sell one of these paintings whilst Vincent lived – The Red Vineyard.

  5. Painting Style He strongly believed in mastering the drawing before adding colour. Used colour to express himself – he liked bright, vibrant colours Yellow was his favourite colour Broad brushstrokes and swirling lines Signed all his work

  9. Vincent particularly enjoyed painting flowers, his favourite flower was the sunflower. In this famous painting he is showing the sunflowers at different stages of their life. Sunflowers(1888)

  12. He also painted many self-portraits Although these are self-portraits by the same artist they all look so different due to the different use of colour and brush strokes.

  13. Van Gogh only became famous after he had died. He is now very famous and his paintings are extremely valuable and sought after in museums and art houses.
