Civics and Economics • The Civics and Economics course will focus on the structure and functions of government institutions at the national, state, and local levels. • Through this course the students will learn to foster patriotism, gain a respect for the law, and encourage a sense of civic duty. • The role of the citizen in the American political system will be analyzed. • It also includes an overview of the principles of economics. • Various types of economic systems are explored with a special emphasis on the United States. • The students will study current events, and will be researching information in groups, as well as an individual project both semesters. • For example, students will form their own third party to challenge America’s two-party system, focusing on a plank that is unique to the Democratic and Republican platforms.

  4. Grading Scale • Tests: 60% • Class/Homework: 10% • Quizzes: 30%

  5. Tests (60%) • Tests will be Multiple Choice, Matching, Short Answer • There will be a total of 9 tests that will count for a total of 60% of your overall grade. • You will need to study prior to the test because they will be very challenging. • In order to make up a test, you must stay after school on the assigned day. • There will be a few questions from previous goals on every test making it cumulative

  6. Class/Homework (10%) • Class and homework will be assigned daily. Some of this I will grade and some of this I will not, therefore you must complete all assignments. Class/Homework will count 10%. • Google Classroom • CNN Student News Journals – we will have journals throughout the semester. The journals will cover a variety of subjects from CNN Student News and should be kept in a separate notebook that will be turned in at the teacher’s request.

  7. Quizzes (30%) • There will be a quiz every few objectives. • After completion of an objective, we will take a quiz the next day to review the material. • The quizzes will be multiple choice, matching, or short answer, counting 30%. • Many of them will be based off of your Quizlet sets

Performance Task • Come to class prepared and ready • Cell phones need to be up at the bell – you have 1 hour per day at school to access them (don’t have them out) • Pick up trash • No gum popping • Be leaders in the school – if you see something that isn’t right (trash on the ground, someone needing help) then chip in • Take PRIDE in what you do – Not everyday is as good as the previous but try to make it everything you can • My expectations of myself are extremely high and yours should be as well

Community Service • Someone define community service…. • Hours – 10+ • At least 5 different activities • You shouldn’t exceed 2 hours with 1 activity • 1 TEST GRADE – HOURS • 2 QUIZ GRADES - Reflection • EDHS expectations are that you help in the immediate community • Helping grandma with her yard DOES NOT count • This should be something to HELP those in the community • FORMS MUST BE COMPLETELY FILLED OUT AND SIGNED

What will we use? • My school website and Google Classroom • Vocab-Quizlet • Quizizz • GimKit • Online Video Guides • CNN10 • ChromeBooks to complete notes – you will do notes and then we will do PPT and highlight major points • All days will be similar because routines are healthy, but each unit will have different spins
