Historic Preservation FEDERAL – STATE – LOCAL • National Park Service – protector of natural resources, battlefields, archeology sites, national parks - preservation, writers, researchers • Staff Historians - PhD • Public Administration – exhibits, parks, buildings, landscapes, museums and archeological sites – ensure compliance regulations being met – primary responsibility - understand impact on cultural resources • Administration of State Programs and historic preservation agencies • Develop Educational programs for the public to learn about historical sites, events and monuments • Locally –Evaluate local historical sites for preservation /impact of development Providing Access to Historical Sites

Contractors and Consultants • Can do most of the above – requires soft skills of juggling multiple projects at the same time – time management, sense of adventure, flexibility - require high level of technical capability – high levels of humanities knowledge • Growing Field – limited resources public and private – make this area thriving • Must also have business savvy – • No direct path to this career slot – Usually requires specialization in a specific area – compliance with cultural resources, regulations and an understanding of local, state and federal statues is big asset • Areas of consulting and private contracting • Preservation/Land Use - knowledge of public land use, determination of potential environmental hazards, expertise in archeology, historic preservation, and museum and exhibit production – conduct surveys, create proposals for historic sites, nominations to the Public Register • Universities, libraries, museums, research centers – academic technology specialists, Ask a consulting historian: EDITORS Ask A Consulting Historian, Ask A Practitioner, Consultants, Entrepreneurialism Providing Historical Perspective and Skills to Special Projects
