  2. The Facts, Please! • Gourds grow on trailing or climbing vines and are closely related to squashes and pumpkins. They bear fruit of various colors and shapes. Some gourd vines are very fast-growing and may reach a height of 10 to 12 feet. Many types of wild gourds grew in the lands around the Mediterranean Sea in Bible times. Some could be eaten, and some were poisonous.

  3. More Facts, Please. • Poison is a substance that can cause sickness or death when it is eaten, drunk, or absorbed into the body. There are many kinds of poisonous plants. Fortunately, some of the most dangerous ones look, smell, or taste awful. Others may look very much like some edible food. (Poisonous mushrooms look much like mushrooms that good food. A person who doesn't know the bad ones from the good ones should never pick and eat wild mushrooms.

  4. More Facts, Please. • An antidote is a substance that can be taken to counteract the harmful effects of poison. It must be administered quickly after the poison has entered the body.
