Metacognition • “Perhaps the most important characteristic for ensuring high achievement and life success is metacognition.” – Marcus Conyer & Dr. Donna Wilson, BrainSMART In the House, page 141 • Metacognition is the skill of thinking about one’s own thinking. • Model problem solving out loud for your children so they can understand your thinking process and learn to do this as well.

Success Simulator • Create a “success simulator” to mimic a flight simulator • Teach children to • Start by telling themselves “I feel good!” • Sit in their seat • Shake the stress from their shoulders • Take a deep breath and relax • See themselves remembering everything they need to know for the test • Practice regularly

Full Questions • Ask full or broad questions to guide children to greater depth of understanding • Resist the urge to simply tell children things • Use questions to guide students to the understanding they seek so that they see how to get there from things they already know or have observed • Use questions to point children in other directions when they overlook details and over simplify things

  6. The 80/20 Principle • This principle states that 20%of the curriculum gets 80% of the results. • Teach children to look for the “20% that gets your 80% of results” • Identify what is key and essential to recall

  7. The 94/6 System Principle • This principle states that only 6% of problems and opportunities are caused by special events and 94% are caused by the system. • If a children do not something, then teach them a system for doing it. • If you don’t get good results, but you keep doing what you’ve always done, then you will continue to not get good results.

  8. The Next Time (TNT) • Teach children not to become frustrated when they make a mistake. • Instead, teach them to stop what they are doing when they realize they made a mistake. • To deal with it as best as they can. • Then to say “The next time I will… “ and see themselves handling the situation differently. • Practice regularly.

  9. Quick Mapping • Encourage your student to make a “quick map” before testing • A quick map is simply an exercise where a student lists everything they can remember about the topic prior to testing • The process can calm fears of forgetting and the visual aid may also encourage recall
