  5. Objectives • In this lesson, you will be able to: • Assess Canada’s role in WWII and the War’s impact on Canada

  6. The War in the Sea • Many battles were fought for control of the seas, worldwide. • Effective use of submarines, battleships, carriers and convoys made sea battle a lethal business. • The Pacific Theater was dominated by water borne warfare, but the most significant theater for Canada was the Atlantic. • King preferred Air Force and Navy participation to the Army

  7. The War in the Sea • High casualties & deaths would threaten Canadian unity. • Also, Air Force and Navy were more attractive to volunteers • In 1940, Canada sent all four of its destroyers to Britain • At the start of the war, Canada had only 1,819 sailors & a total of 13 ships.

  8. Battle of the Atlantic • The longest campaign in WWII • Fought for control of shipping lanes between North America and Britain • Germany wanted to cut off supplies to Britain to force them into submission • Britain depended on supplies from Canada and the States http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xzm68a_canadians-remember-battle-of-the-atlantic_news

  9. Battle of the Atlantic • British and Canadian (later American) navies were committed to putting an end to the submarine threat • German submarines operated in groups called “wolf packs” out of ports in occupied countries. • U Boats were German submarines and were active even around Canadian waters

  10. Battle of the Atlantic • 1941 – German U Boats were sinking Allied ships faster than they could be built • Winter of 1942-43 heavy losses (lack of ships and experience) was causing the Allies to lose the Atlantic War. • March 1943- US, Br. & Can. Admirals meet in Washington DC • New Plan- Br. to equip & train the Canadians, US to provide air cover, & Canada to take over protection of entire North Atlantic.

  11. Battle of the Atlantic • The Royal Canadian Navy would escort ships to Britain with their small warships called corvettes. These would protect the supplies to Britain. The convoy system saw some success • The Royal Canadian Air Force was supplied bombers that would cover the convoys until they reached British airspace • Sonar technology alerted Allies of German presence

  12. Battle of the Atlantic • By 1943 the German Wolfpacks became less effective and suffered heavy damages • Escort ships would drop explosives and the Allied planes would drop bombs on the U Boats • The Allies had won the Battle of the Atlantic • Their success was due to better equipment, training & air cover. • They also broke the German code, using a stolen Enigma machine. • Canadians even manned two British aircraft carriers • By the end of the war, Canada had the third largest Navy in the world with 373 ships.
