Do Now • Add Assistive and Adaptive Technology to your Table of Contents • Create a t-chart in your journal like this: Assistive Technology Adaptive Technology
What is Engineering? • Engineeringis the process of creatingtechnology. • Name some examples of technology that engineers, scientists, and inventors have created.
What is Bioengineering? • Bioengineeringis the application of engineering(technology) to living things, such as humans and plants. • Bioengineers look at problems that occur in living things and invent technology that will help with these problems.
Assistive Bioengineering • Technologythat is developed to help organisms, but DOES NOT change them. • ASSIST = HELP • Examples: • Eyeglasses • Wheelchairs • Antibiotics
Adaptive Bioengineering • Technologydeveloped to help living organisms and DOESchange them. • ADAPT = CHANGE • Examples: • Lasik Eye Surgery • Knee replacement • New strains of crop in agriculture
Adaptive or Assistive???? • On the bottom of your notes write the name of the item you see underneath the type of bioengineering you think it is. • Remember: Assist = Help Adapt = Change

With your group… Use the Engineering and Design Process to come up with a plan/design to build a prosthetic arm (from the elbow down) with something that will grip things similar to how a hand works. • Identify problem • Research • Brainstorm solutions • Evaluate and choose a solution • Draw a design and write the list of materials you would need
