  3. We like to frolic without mud! Ahhh yes! Frolic is good, no?!? Greece is UNLIKE any civ we have covered so far… They have NO… MUD!! Don’t worry…Even though there’s no MUD… The Greeks still frolic!!!!

  4. You may be asking yourselves… “If they don’t have mud, what on earth do they do?!?” • Mild climate for good soil = grow grain, grapes, & olives • Domesticate sheep & goats • Traded to get what they need!

  5. PLUS… THEY HAVE… • TONS of Mountains • TONS of Islands • TONS of Small Rivers

  6. You look good! THE 1ST PEEPS… THE MINOANS! (no crazy camel herders here!) No, No… YOU look good!

  7. The Minoans… Lived on island of Crete 2000-1500 BC What else could they do but …TRADE Strong navy SO no forts!

  8. Minos is their King • That’s how they got their name! • Caught a ½ Bull ½ human called a Minotaur • Kept Minotaur in Knossos (nos-us) castle • Volcanic Eruption sent tidal waves…weakend & soon destroyed Minoans 

  10. INTO CITY STATES!Aka:POLIS MOUNTAINS! Why don’t they just form into one huge civilization!?

  11. FEATURES OF POLIS’ We ♥ Sparta! (and only Sparta) • Small Size – 3-10 sq mi • Small population @ 1,000 to 10,000 “real citizens” • Acropolis = Hill or Mountain + Temples & public buildings • Agroa = public meeting place, marketplace • Each city state distinct! • Own laws, government, $, calendar, weights & measures • Some Commonalities = Fraternity! • Love for your City state • Completely loyal to yours only MOST FAMOUS: SPARTA & ATHENS! Think of: CLS!

  12. YOUR TASK: Create your own fully functioning city-state with 3-4 others!!! The ancient Greeks had hundreds of years to perfect theirs… you only have till the end of the hour plus some time tomorrow! Here’s the details…

  23. To create your polis, do the following… 1. Name your city state! You a have been given a name 2. Sketch an outline of your city-state • Make sure to include & label your Acropolis, Agora, etc • Draw what we would see in your city state (buildings, marketplace, etc) • Label square mileage (historically accurate please!) • Lable population (H.A. please!) 3. Make Some Laws! • Each City-State had its own laws! • Make 5 laws for your city state & write them on your poster • 4 serious ones, 1 for fun 4. Make a Government • Democracy or Tyranny? • Draw a representation of your government on the poster 5. Make some $ • Design your own currency & include it on your paper • Label some goods you can buy with your currency 6. You gotta have Fraternity! • You are VERY loyal to your city-state! • Write 3 unique features to your city-state • Create a Mascot that encompasses them! • Poster
