Background • Figurative language is commonly usedin poem or lyrics. • Figurative languages areincluded in Muse’s song lyrics • Lyrics of Muse’ “Black Holes and Revelations” album content such figurative language and opinion here is how the respondents explanation about that lyrics. • respondents might have assumption that the lyrics contend such figurative language or dictions that later on bring them to particular interpretation.

  3. Statement of Problems Theunderstanding of readers in song lyrics by finding the contextual meaning by the figurative language • What kinds of figurative language of found in Muse’ lyrics by the readers? • What are the readers’ understanding on the figurative language of found in Muse’ lyrics?

Purposes and Significances There are two main purposes of this research: • To find out kinds of figurative language of found in Muse’ lyrics by the readers. • To analyze the readers’ understanding on the figurative language of found in Muse’ lyrics. There are main significances of this research: • Theoretically, this study will provide a beneficial reference for the study in increasing knowledge and insights about figurative language • The results of this study can provide practical contribution for students and faculty of Islamic State University Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung.

Conceptual Framework • Reader response theory encompasses an array of approaches to literary and cultural text that focus on the role of reader in the creation of meaning. • Reader response theory recognizes the reader as an active agent who imparts real existence to the work and completes its meaning through interpretation. • the experience-oriented response statement is analyzed by the reader in a response-analysis statement. Here the reader (1) characterizes his or her response to the text as a whole; (2) identifies the various responses prompted by different aspects of the text, which, of course, ultimately led to the student’s response to the text as a whole; and (3) determines why these responses occurred. • Reader’s response theories are divided into three types: those who focus upon the individual’s reader experience (individualists); are those who conduct psychological experiments on a defined set of readers (experimenters); and those who assume a fairly uniform response by all readers (uniformists)

  6. Procedure of Research • Method of Research • In this study, the writer used descriptive method to analyze all the data that the writers find. The descriptive method has an aim to provide an overview and compare the data from the source language into the target language accurately and systematically. • Data • Data of this research are qualitative data. Data of this research are sentences that contain the Figurative Language in Muse Song Lyrics.

  7. Source of Data • The writer obtained the primary data from the Muse Song Lyrics in “Black Holes and Revelations“album which is contained in azlyrics.com. Another data are the results of readers’ understanding from the respondents; English Department Students of UIN Sunan Gunung Djati, in third grade. • Respondents • The writer chooses students population of UIN Sunan Gunung Djati, who is in the third grade of English Literature Department learning about language.

  8. Technique of Data Collection • Giving questionnaire to the reader. The questionnaire itself contained the problem that might be solved in order to find reader’s response about Muse song Lyrics. • Interview that was done to the reader of English Literature Department about their knowledge of Figurative Language. • Doing a library research and browsing through internet could not be separated in this research. It was conducted to find out supporting data included from the book and the result of the previous studies.

  9. Technique of Data Analysis • Reading the data, either the main data or secondary data. • Categorizing the data that gained from the respondents. • Analyzing various themes that come from the response of the respondents. • Making conclusion.
