  2. Who are Friends of Bosque del Apache?

  3. Our Mission: We support Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge and promote appreciation and conservation of wildlife and habitat.

  4. Bosque del Apache Nature Store • “The Face of the Friends” • Friends management is now in the store 7 days per week • Store Manager – Danielle Gallegos • Assistant Store Manager – Cory Gallegos • Store Advisor – Julie-Anna Blomquist • Increased focus on children’s environmental education • FY 17-18 Sales = $280,600 Net Profit = $21,928

  5. Festival: Celebrating Cranes for 31 years! • 30th Annual Festival of the Cranes – 2017: • 156 events • Revenue = $147,712 • Net profit = $15,389 • New Festival Manager: • Julie-Anna Blomquist • FOC Advisor: • Michael Hanauer • 31st Annual Festival of the Cranes – 2018: • 139 events from November 14-17, with 5 special pre&post FOC events • Event seats 33% birding, 46% photography, 21% other (Dinner, Social, Wildlife Zone, etc.) • Registration is going well, but please spread the word to your friends as we want to have more first-time festival go-ers!

Friends Membership • Membership remains solid at 1000 • Friends in 4 countries and 46 states • Raised $170K between memberships and • donations – up $77K since last annual meeting • 108 members make monthly contributions totaling • $13,402 in revenue over the last year • All Friends members are now listed on our website, by level • 61.4% renewal rate • Membership Care Manager: • Trisha Sanchez

Friends Fundraising • Submitted 3 grants – received $15K • Photo Intensives - $20K net • General Donations – $32K • Legacy Gifts - $105K • Currently looking into Raffle/Crowdfunding idea • Support activities – Messaging, Website, Marketing • Development Director: Michael Hanauer • Executive Director: Deb Caldwell • Webmaster: Julie-Anna Blomquist • Finance Admin: Amy Stephens

  9. Friends Strategy Friends’ 5-year campaign connects to Friends’ mission & vision and informs how we use acquired funding. We support five distinct activities -- SPEAR. • Support the refuge • Partner with a variety of organizations that can contribute to the advancement of the refuge • Educate in conjunction with the refuge about environmental concerns, needs of wildlife, and conservation practices • Advocate for relevant preservation & conservation issues that affect the refuge • Research – support the refuge’s research needs through project, equipment, & intern funding

  10. How did your memberships and donations help the refuge this year?

  11. You helped fund a new bridge! With the help of a very generous donation, Friends recently purchased a new steel bridge to enhance access to the Boardwalk Trail.

  12. You helped pollinators & water conservation Added more pollinator plants to the Desert Arboretum and now have two types of rainwater catchment systems - 1,500-gallon tank and piping system, and new 550-gallon slim line tanks.

  13. Bus scholarships More than five hundred students and teachers experienced the magic of the refuge this year! A jointly-sponsored trip with Sierra Club brought whole families to Bosque del Apache.

  14. Refuge building upgrades The Friends House is now safer, more energy-efficient, and freshened up! The Volunteer Center got a much-needed facelift, thanks to a legacy gift from FWS volunteer, Lynne Braden.

  15. You funded Environmental Education & Outreach Events • Stipends to support Biology Interns who help with • endangered species work, surveys, and outreach events. • Free events to connect the refuge to our community and to • teach about conservation. • Bosque Conservation Days March & October • Desert Arboretum Stroll April • Annual Meeting September • Wildlife Zone at Festival November • Holiday Open House December
