  1. LAYING OF LWR PRAKASH KADIYA. SR. INST. TRACK-07

  2. LAYING OF LWR/CWR (Survey) • FOOT BY FOOT SURVEY • LOCATIONS WHERE LWR/CWR CANNOT BE CARRIED THROUGH. • SUCH STRETCHES TO BE ISOLATED • PRELIMINARY WORKS TO BE COMPLETED BEFORE LAYING LWR/CWR • Replacement of insulated joints • Realignment of curves • Lifting or lowering (to eliminate sags and humps) • Introduction and improvement of vertical curves • Stabilization of troublesome formation • Rehabilitation of weak bridges

  3. LAYING OF LWR/CWR • A detailed plan shall be made showing the exact locations of SEJs and of various other features like curves, level crossings, bridges, points and crossings, glued joints, gradient, rail section, sleepers, sleeper density • The plans may be prepared to horizontal scale of 1:5000 ( 20 CMs FOR 1 KM OF TRACK).

  4. APPROVAL OF P C E: • Installation of LWR/CWR or change in constitution at a later stage shall have the approval of the C T E in each case, on a detailed plan prepared in accordance with LWR manual. However, for any deviation from this manual, the approval of PCE shall be obtained.

  5. TRACK STRUCTURE FOR LWR/CWR • BALLAST CUSHION AND SECTION • Minimum 250 mm at the time of installation. • 300 mm or 200 mm ballast cushion over 150 mm of sub ballast for speeds in excess of 130 kmph on BG or 100 kmph on MG. • Profile should be as per fig. 4.2.1 (a) to (d) given in LWR Manual.

  6. TRACK STRUCTURE FOR LWR/CWR • Changes as per cs no. 14 & 16, in fig. 4.2.1 (a) to (d)

  7. TRACK STRUCTURE FOR LWR/CWR • Changes as per cs no. 16, item no.2 in fig. 4.2.1 (a) to (d)

  8. TEMPERATURE RECORDS • Ascertain tm, and maximum daily Variation from records available with the PWI-in charge. • If not available adopt the tm and range as shown in rail temperature map of India.

  9. MATERIALS REQUIRED • FOLLOWING MATERIALS ARE REQUIRED FOR LAYING ONE LWR:- 1. Four numbers of 6.5 meter or longer rail pieces of the same rail section asLWR 2. Two sets of SEJs with sleepers and fastenings 3. Adequate numbers of 1 meter long fishplates with special screw clamps/joggled fishplates with slotted grooves & bolted clamps. (Slotted fishplates with fish-bolts may be used in exceptional cases)

  10. MATERIALS REQUIRED (Cont’d..) 4 1 metre and 10 cm straight edges. • Callipers and feeler gauges (2mm to 0.1mm) • Rail cutting equipment • DESTRESSING EQUIPMENT i.e. Rollers, mechanical/hydraulic rail tensor, mallet and side rollers for curves, fig. 5.3 (viii) (a) & (b) • Alumino - thermit / mobile gas pressure welding equipment and consumable materials • Equipment for protection of track • Equipment for night working.

  11. PRELIMINARY WORKS DEEP SCREENING OF BALLAST ALONG WITH • Lifting or lowering of track, if required, • Provide standard ballast section IF ANY OF THE PRELIMINARY WORKS CAN NOT BE COMPLETED BEFORE INSTALLATION OF LWR/CWR • Such stretches should be isolated by providing SEJ. • On completion of these works, such stretches may be welded, destressed and joined with LWR/CWR.

  12. WELDING OF RAILS TO FORM LWR • Weld into 10/20 rail; panel • While unloading 880 grade (90 UTS) or higher grade rails, handling instructions laid down manual, should be followed. • Insert SEJs at the predetermined locations with proper gaps • Provide closure rails of 6.5m or longer at LWR side/s of SEJ to facilitate adjustment of gaps during destressing operation

  13. WELDING OF RAILS TO FORM LWR • Laying of LWRcan be done at any time of the year, but • After welding about 1km or longer, destressing to be done • If not possible within a reasonable period • Observe if temp.rises above t + 20ºC, (t = Welding/laying temp.) then • Temporary destress at likely tmax - 10 ºc until final destressing. • If the rail temperature comes down appreciably, cold weather patrolling Should be introduced. • Final destressing after consolidation of track

  14. GAPS AT SEJ GAPS AT SEJ SHALL BE ADJUSTED AT THE TIME OF LAYING/SUBSEQUENT DESTRESSING OFLWR/CWR, AS ILLUSTRATED IN FIG. 5.6 ( C. S. no. 10) AND SHALL BE AS UNDER:-

  15. BALLAST PROFILE: FOR B.G. S/L (PRC SLPR) FOR B.G. D/L (PRC SLPR) TRACK CENTRE @ 5300

  16. EXTRA BALLAST PROVISIONS: • BALLAST ON OUTER SIDE OF CURVE 500 MM UPTO 440 MET RAD. • SHARPER THAN 440—600 MM ON OUTER SIDE & PROVIDED BEYOND 100 OF TANGENT POINT. * IN CASE OF REVERSE CURVE :- RAD 875 -1500, 100 MET ON EITHER SIDE OF COMMON POINT SHALL BE PROVIDED.

  17. THANKS

  18. LWR : ALIGNMENT: Shall not be laid on curves sharper than 440m radius both for BG & MG. • In temp. Zone –I up to 5o on BG (C.S.No-11) • Min. track structure - 52 kg rail on PSC, m + 7 density 300 mm ballast cushion with following precautions • Increase shoulder ballast to 600 mm on outside and provide for 100 m beyond the tangent point • Reference marks every 50 m for creep • SEJ 100 m away from tangent point

  19. PERMITTED LOCATIONS (Cont’d…) • Each curve greater than 250 m length – provide SEJ on either side. • May be continued through reverse curves not sharper than 875m radius. • For reverse curves sharper than 1500m radius, shoulder ballast of 600mm over a length of 100m on either side of the common point should be provided

  20. PERMITTED LOCATIONS (Cont’d…) • GRADIENTS • STEEPEST 1 IN 100 • VERTICAL CURVE (Minimum radius ) • BG MG • A 4000 m • B 3000 m ALL ROUTES 2500 m • C,D & E 2500 m LWR/CWR plan requires the approval of THOD. However any deviation from the provision of this manual approval of PCE shall be obtained
