2. BEFORE WE BEGIN… A FEW THINGS TO LOOK AT BEFORE WE BEGIN OUR LECTURE: • By 1942, Germany had effectively taken over Europe and Japan had swallowed up Asia. • People’s feelings towards the war have turned significantly negative, and they desperately want to see the end. map

3. On December 22nd 1941, the Allied leaders meet to decide that EUROPE COMES FIRST. Stalin wants to divide Germany by attacking from two fronts once more. [downfall of Germany in WW1] map ALLIES ARE READY FOR THE PUSH

4. Africa has been a raging battlefield since 1941. The Allied forces lead by Montgomery (Britain) fought at El Alamein. The Germans were outfought in El Alamein, and this was Rommel’s first setback in Africa. map THE NORTH AFRICAN CAMPAIGN

5. With the retreat of Rommel’s forces, heading west, the Allies struck once more. Lead by Eisenhower, 107,000 Allied soldiers landed in Africa. Montgomery chasing the Germans from the east and Eisenhower heading in from the west, the Germans were well and truly defeated. Contd. map

7. Hitler ordered the attack of Stalingrad on the August 22nd. Rich oil fields Arguably the bloodiest battle of the war with 1.5 million casualties. “No one was to step backwards!”-- Stalin BATTLE OF STALINGRAD map

8. Contd. • The Soviets put everything on the line to defend Stalingrad. • With 90% of the city already conquered, the odds were very against Stalin. However, the Soviets were saved by the Russian winter. • What started out as a German offense again ended up with the German retreat. • The Soviets has defended their 99% destroyed city. map

9. The Fall of Italy • On July 10th 1943, 180,000 British and US forces landed on Sicily. • Italy surrenders and Mussolini is forced out of his position as dictator. • However, Mussolini sees a disgraceful end after serving Hitler, controlling the German conquered Northern Italy. map

10. Total War • “putting everything on the line”—This is no understatement. • A country pouring all their resources into winning the war. • Speed limits reduced to save gasoline, collecting little scraps of metal to make artillery shells… • A nation putting their differences aside for a bigger threat… map

11. Prejudice against any Japanese • After the bombing of Pearl Harbour, The Americans had become prejudiced against the Japanese American residing in the USA. • Innocent Japanese-Americans were relocated and imprisoned. • From 1941~46 over 30,000 were imprisoned for being a threat to national security. map

12. D-DAY • With 3.5 million men waiting for an order… Under General Eisenhower, they were to land on Normandy. • Took place on the 4th of June 1944. • With the British and the Americans from the west and the Soviets from the east. • http://brokenworld.wikispaces.com/Allies+Finally+Victorious map

13. V-E DAY • The Allies from the western front liberates France, Belgium, Luxembourg, and parts of the Netherlands. • The Battle of Bulges • 3 million from the Southwest and 6 million from the east surround the city of Berlin. • Hitler commits suicide • On the 7th of May 1945, Eisenhower accepted the surrender of the Germans. • With the official signing of the surrender, the war in Europe was over.

14. V-J DAY • The Japanese were still relentless in their fighting even after the German surrender. • Battle of Iwo Jima • Then onto Okinawa • Invading Japanese mainland would cost 500,000 more lives… So instead he looked to end it in a different fashion. map

15. Contd. • On the 6th of August, an atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima • 3 days later onto Nagasaki • With the Soviets also invading Manchuko, Hirohito had no choice but to order the ceasefire. • On the 14th of August 1945, Japan surrendered. • This day in history was named V-J Day. map
