ESL Identification and Placement Procedures for Kindergarten Students

Learn about the assessment and placement procedures for ESL students in the first semester of kindergarten. Parents must be notified within 30 days if their child is identified for ESL participation.   1. ESL Identification, Assessment, & Placement Procedures *Place all 1st semester Kindergarten students in the LEP pool to take the ACCESS in the spring. **The parents should be notified within thirty (30) days after the beginning of the school year that their child has been identified for participation in, or is participating in an ESL program. If after receiving this information, a parent may refuse services. A Denial to Participate Form must be signed. If a parent denies participation, remove student immediately from ESL classes. The school district is still required to provide accommodations in instruction through programs other than ESL, as well as monitor the student’s academic performance. Additionally, the student is required to participate in the ACCESS until student is proficient. ***ELL Committee must meet & notify parents within thirty (30) days of student enrollment at beginning of year; ten (10) days if enrollment occurs in middle of year.
