What is an “awkward sentence” ?? • An “awkward sentence” is a sentence that combines two or more segments in a confusing or inaccurate manner is normally called an awkward sentence.
Notes: Awkward Sentences(Please write out ALL notes) • Sentences normally consist of smaller units of meaning--phrases or clauses. When the writer combines these units in a confusing manner, the reader may not get the point, even if each part is clear when read separately.
Notes: Awkward Senteces • Example: The following two clauses are clear when read separately: I read in a magazine ... Scientists believe they have discovered a new subatomic particle. • When we combine these two clauses with the wrong word, however, we create a slightly confusing sentence: I read in a magazine where scientists believe they have discovered a new subatomic particle.subatomic particle.
Notes: Awkward Sentences • The word "where" normally refers to a "place where"; in this sentence, however, the location of the magazine is not important. A more accurate way to combine the clauses is to use the word "that": I read in a magazine that scientists believe they have discovered a new

Now You Try….Directions: Write the “awkward sentence”. Then rewrite the sentence correctly. • The best teachers help each student become a better student both academically and emotionally. 2) High school students have a lot of pressure on them being high achievers.
Correct Answers…. • The best teachers help each student to grow both academically and emotionally. • The sentence was awkward because it repeated “student” twice. Replacing it with a different word will make it less awkward.
Correct Answers…. 2) Being high achievers, high school students have a lot of pressure on them. --> In the awkward sentence, we are not sure whether high school students are high achievers and therefore have lots of pressure on them--or whether they have pressure on them to be high achievers. Do you see the difference?
