  1. INDIAN Satellite Radiances in UM Assimilation System: An initiative under IMDAA

  2. Outline • National monsoon Mission (NMM) and IMDAA • Megha-Tropiques’ SAPHIR radainces in OPS and VAR system • INSAT-3D Sounder radainces in OPS and VAR system

  3. National Monsoon Mission (NMM), India • The major objectives of NMM are: • To setup a state of the art dynamical modeling frame work for improving prediction skill of • Seasonal and extended range prediction system • Short and medium range prediction system • 2. To setup the infrastructure and manpower required to improve the prediction skill at all time scales over Indian region • 3. To build a working partnership between the Academic/Research & Development Organizations and the operational Agency to improve the monsoon forecast skill. • IMDAA (Indian Monsoon Data Assimilation and Analysis) project under NMM • OPS and VAR code changes have been made to assimilate radiances from three instruments onboard Indian satellites. • Microwave sounder radiances from SAPHIR onboard Megha-Tropiques • Imager and Sounder radiances from INSAT-3D

  4. Megha-Tropiques The Megha Tropiques (MT), a joint Indo-French satellite, was launched by the Indian launch vehicle, PSLV-C18 on 12 October 2011. MT is positioned in a highly inclined equatorial plane of 20°at a height of 867 km above the Earth so as to orbit the tropical region (30°Sto 30°N) nearly 14–15 times per day. The four payloads on-board MT consisting ofa microwave radiometer(MADRAS), a microwave humidity sounder (SAPHIR), a radiation budget instrument (SCARAB) and a radio-occultation sounder (ROSA) are important for the study of tropical convective systems and hydrological cycle SAPHIR and SCARAB have across-track scanning, MADRAS has conical scanning. SAPHIR and SCARAB images are distorted at the Edge of the Swath, MADRAS images are not.

  30. Remarks: Initial trial runs show positive impact of SAPHIR Microwave Radiances in UM Assimilation System. Reduced the standard deviation of radiances from MW, IR and WV channel instrument onboard other satellites. NWP index change of 0.367% and UK Index change of 1.82% over the Tropics. Near-neutral impact of INSAT-3D Sounder radiance in UM Assimilation System
