Background 1986On January 17, the commemoration of the Buddha’s attaining enlightenment, she was tonsured to become a nun at Huayen Lotus Society Taipei. 1986On December 4, she was fully ordained after accepting the San Tan Commandments at Yuanhen Temple(元亨寺)in Kaohsiung. 1990Master Hsiendu was graduated from Huayen Buddhist Graduate School on July 4.

  4. 1991 Master Hsiendu was engaged by the directorate as the superintendent of Huayen Lotus Society. Then she started to lead the assembly to practice and launch into her preaching. 1992 On August 31, Master Hsiendu was engaged as the vice president, and concurrently served the position of the director of education. 1993On October 16, Master Hsiendu was granted as the 38th generation of Qianhua, Lu School, Nanshan, and the 18th of GuangxiaoMonastery. She was given the Dharma name—Xuyin(續因), Siqi(思齊).

  5. 1994On April 16, the sixth board-and-supervisor meeting of the third term was convened at Huayen Lotus Society. Seven members, Chengyi, Hsiendu, Mindu(明度), Tandu(檀度), Zhuandu(轉度), Hongdu(弘度), and Yuanguo(圓果),were elected as the new trustees of the directorate, and three new supervisors, Monk Wuxuan(悟玄), Danyun Mo(莫淡雲), and Hongchao Lee(李鴻超) were also decided. In this meeting, Elder Chengyi was successively elected to be the president. 。

  6. 1992 On June 1, Huayen Lotus Society was reformed into the thickly populated monastery, guiding the followers to learn Buddhism in the form of practice assembly instead of the social functions lasted over the years. 1994 On October 14, the handing-over ceremony was held; Master Hsiendu took over the office of Jinghai(淨海),the sixth abbot, becoming the sixth abbess of Huayen lotus Society.

  7. . 1999 On September 13, due to agedness and heart weakness, Elder Chengyi resigned his commission of the president in Huayen Buddhist College, and Master Hsiendu then was engaged to take over his duty. From then on, Master Hsiendu was in charge of the lecture course on Huayen Sutra. 2000 On May 6, the handing-over ceremony was held. Due to the expiration of her term in office, the sixth abbess, Master Hsiendu, was unable to continue her office according to the board rules.

Master Mindu was commissioned to be the seventh abbess, and Master Hsiendu was engaged as the vice president of Huayen Lotus Society. 2003 On June 14, the handing-over ceremony was held in Foen Temple in Beitou, Taipei(台北市北投佛恩寺). The initial abbot, Master Tongdu(通度法師),resigned fromhis office, and passed his duty down to Master Hsiendu. Therein, Elder Chengyi brought her to the seat, and the present elders from different monasteris, the honored guests from all fields, and followers made ceremony a solemn one.

  9. 2003On August 3, the handing-over ceremony was held at Huayen Lotus Society in Milpitas, USA. Elder Chengyi, as the abbot, passed his heavy duty down to Master Hsiendu. 2004 On March 11, the seventh board meeting of the eleventh term was convened at Zhiguang Vocational High School; therein, Master Hsiendu was engaged as the vice president.

  10. 2005On March 5, Master Hsiendu had finished her study in Deli, India, receiving the doctor degree of philosophy.On March sixth, a banquet was held in Huayen Lotus Society at night to celebrate her fulfillment of study. 2007On January 27, Master Hsiendu took over the office as the president of Taipei Foen Charity Foundation (財團法人台北市佛恩慈善事業基金會), given the wish to bring the foundation into sustainable operation and benefit beings with her adequate experience of social welfare.

  12. Lectures on Sutras & Dharma Propagation 1999Since September 13, Master Hsiendu has been giving weekly lectures on Huayen Sutra for students and followers at the lecture hall. Started with The Wonderful Adornments of the Leaders of the Worlds (世主妙嚴品), she has done more than twenty files to Ten Dedications (十迴向品). 2005On October 27, Master Hsiendu was invited to Wenxuan Hall(文宣堂)in National Palace Museum to give a speech of the Origin and Development of Huayen School.

  13. 2007 On January 1 and 2 , Master Hsiendu was invited to lecture on the Doctrine of Huayen at Wusheng Bodhi Court in Ling Jiou Mountain, Fulong, Taipei county. 2007On November 11, the 60th commemoration of Taipei Buddhist Association’s establishment, the series of lectures on Buddhism and Life were held. Master Hsiendu was invited to give a lecture with the topic of the Inspiration that Huayen Sutra Brings to Life.

Overseas Dharma Propagation From April 23, 2001 to April 20, 2008 in Mainland China Guanxiao Monastery in Thai, Jiangsu(江蘇泰州光孝寺), Guanxiao Buddhist College in Thai(泰州光孝佛學研究社), Guanyin Chen Monastery in Haian(海安觀音禪寺), Yufo Monastery Buddhist College in Shanghai(上海玉佛寺佛學院), Jinshan Nunnery Buddhist College in Juangxi(江西金山寺尼眾佛學院), Jiuhua Mountain Buddhist College(九華山佛學院), Minnan Buddhist College(閩南佛學院), Hongzhou Buddhist College(杭州佛學院), Fahai Monastery in Yang(揚州法海寺), Jie Chung Lu Monastery in Xiyuan, Su(蘇州西園戒幢律寺),

Zhanshan College in Shandong(山東湛山學院), Yufo Monastery and Huazang Monastery in Shanghai(上海玉佛寺、華藏寺), Shentong Monastery in Tsinan(濟南神通寺), Chinese Buddhist College(中國佛學院), Chinese Buddhist College-Qixia branch(中國佛學院棲霞山分院), Chinese Buddhist Culture Graduate School(中國佛教文化研究所), Department of Religion and Philosophy in Peking University(北京大學宗教學系及哲學系), Department of Fudan University(復旦大學哲學系), and Department of Philosophy in Shangdong(山東大學哲學系), a total of 16 times out of 20 organizations.

From July 23,2001 to August 3, 2008 in Europe and USA Huayen Lotus Society in California, USA (美國加州華嚴蓮社), Bern Court Suite in USA (美國聞思修居士林),Mahabodhi Society of USA (美國菩提學會), Chinese-American Mutual Assistance Association in California (加州華僑相助會), True Family Valuesfrom Native American Times, Huayen Buddhist theoretical lectures, Huayen symposiums, the Buddhist Center in Vienna, Austria, and the Buddhist Center in Hungary,a total of 10 times out of 8 organizations.

  18. From June 12, 2004 to November 21, 2005 in Southeastern Asia Lazurite Temple, Bukit Mertajam, Palau Pinang, Malaysia(馬來西亞檳城大山腳琉璃精舍), Malaysia Buddhist College(馬來西亞佛學院), Singapore Buddhist Association(新加坡佛教會), and Malaysian Buddhist Association(馬來西亞佛教總會).

Cultural Work & Publication 1993On September 1, Master Hsiendu gave lectures on Huayen study, and compiled to publish TheLectures on Huayen Study 《華嚴學講義》. 1993She taught the course of Buddhist hymn, and compiled to publish TheSystems and Ceremonial Etiquette in Buddhism 《佛教的制度與儀軌》. 1994On January 1, she held the first Chan seminar for teachers, and compiled to publish TheLectures on Chan Study《禪學講義》.

  21. 1996 On January 1, in order to attract followers' attention to read, Master Hsiendu added the part of Huayen Sutra into All Ways Bimonthly and reformed it into the color printing one. 1996 On August 1, she set up the department of series publication, working on The series of Textbooks of Huayen《華嚴教材系列》 and the compilation of TheRevision Commentary on Huayen Sutra《新修華嚴經疏鈔》, which was officially published on July 1, 2000.

  22. 1997 On February 19, she edited to publish The Bibliography of Huayen Sutra《華嚴文獻目錄》. 1997 On July 15, to memorialize the commemoration of Avalokitesvara’s attaining enlightenment, Master Hsiendu specially edited to publish The Dharma Door of Avalokitesvara《觀音法門》. 1997 On December 24, she edited to publish The Thought of Pure Land and the Dharma Door in Huayen《華嚴淨土思想與念佛法門》。

  23. 1997 On October 16, the Website of Huayen Lotus Society projected by Master Hsiendu had been done; the address is http://www.huayen.org.tw. Then she edited to pubish Huayen Network Special 《華嚴資訊網路特刊》. 1998 On March 27, Turning the Dharma Wheel 1 《轉法輪集》(一)was published, which is collection of Master Hsiendu’s speeches in the Dharma assembly over the years.

  24. 1998 On October 10, Master Hsiendu edited to publish The Monographic Research on Huayen Study《華嚴學專題研究》. 1999 On April 1, Turning the Dharma Wheel 2《轉法輪集》(二)was pubished. 2000 On May 10, Master Hsiendu invited expterts to assist with the illustrations, cooperating to publish The Entry into the Realm of Reality in Huayen Sutra—Sudhana’s Journey to Visiting 53 Beneficial Friends《華嚴經入法界品‧成佛之路-善財童子五十三參的故事》.

  25. 2001Since Septemmber 22, Master Hsiendu has been giving a weekly lecture on Huayen Sutra on the fourth floor in Huayen Lotus Society. And the lectures were recorded by Buddha Compassion TV Station(佛教衛視)to be a lecture course for Buddhist College On The Air(空中佛學院),and were also produced into audio teaching materials like CDs and VCDs. 2002On January 10, Master Hsiendu collected the contents of her lectures on Huaye Sutra to publish The Simple Explanation for Ten Stages in Huayen Sutra 《華嚴經十地品淺釋》, which was divided into volume 1 and 2.

  26. 2004 On March 20, she collected the contents of her lectures on Huaye Sutra to publish TheSimple Explanation for the Wonderful Adornments of the Leaders of the Worlds《華嚴經世主妙嚴品淺釋》. 2006 On October 16, Master Hsiendu, for the first time, published her English edition publication—Development of the Huayen School During the Tang Dynasty (641 A.D. to 845 A.D.) .

  27. 2007 Feeling that foreigners have intense interests in learning Huayen several times when Master Hsiendu propagated the doctrine of Huayen in Europe and America, she thinks the work of producing, editing, and translating Huayen Sutra into the English edition is necessary. And it may take long to fulfill the project. Therefore, since January 3, Master Hsiendu primarily hired the specialist to translate Huayen Sutra, produce the English-edition materials for monographic lectures on Huayen, and prepare the teaching materials for the course of Huayen in English.

  28. 2007On June 10, Vice Presient Hsiendu followed Prsident Chengyi to propagate the Dharma door of Maitreya’s Pure Land, and edited The Compilation of the Intensive Practice on Maitreya《彌勒繫念法事全集》, which contains reciting The Trilogy of Maitreya《彌勒三經》, preaching the doctrine of Dharma, making confession, making vows, and making dedications for the rebirth in Maitreya’s pure land, and so on.

  29. 2008On February 27, to make beginners undersatand Huayen Sutra more easily, Master Hsiendu continuously compiled and edited her lectures to publish TheRecord of Lectures on Huayen Sutra《華嚴經講錄》; The Appearance of Buddha <如來現相品> and The Samadhi of Samantabhdra<普賢三昧品> are the two chapters that are published at present.

  30. 2008 In order to popularize the Huayen teaching in Mainland China, Master Hsiendu changed her book—TheLectures on Huayen Study into the version of simplified Chinese chcracter, and authorized China Religion and Culture Publisher to publish. It was officially published in Peking on April 1. This book has not only become the must-read book for studying Huayen, but the essential textbook in the departments of Philosophy and Religion in local colleges and universities.

  31. Handing-down Dharma & Ordaining Disciples

  32. Handing-down Dharma & Ordaining Disciples From August 9, 1990 to August 17, 2008, there are total 22 disciples tonsured and given Dharma under Master Hsiendu in Huayen Lotus Society. The disciples tonsured under Master Hsiendu are Tianding(天定), Tianjie(天戒), Tianyan(天演), Tianxing(天行), Tianlian(天蓮), Tianyue(天悅), Tianrun(天潤), Tianguan(天觀), Tianxiang(天翔), and so on.

From November 27, 2005 to August 17, 2008, Master Hsiendu followed the traditional rules of Buddhism to hold the Dharma impartation ceremony for her disciples, wishing to continue Buddha’s wisdom and prosper Buddhism. There have been total 18 nuns ordained and given the Dharma names. They are Tianmin(天明), Tianjie(天戒), Tianyuan(天緣), Tianyan(天演), Tianzang(天藏), Tianlian(天蓮), Tianxin(天信), Tianyue(天悅), Tianyin(天映), Tianning(天寧), Tianrong(天融), Tianyin(天因), Tianhua(天華), Tianwei(天惟), Tianyun(天韻), Tianneng(天能), Tianxing(天行).

  34. Accroding to this ceremony, every disciple imparted the Dharma was granted as the 39th generation of Qianhua, Lu School, Nanshan(南山律宗千華第三十九世), the 19th of Guangxiao Monastery(泰州光孝堂上第十九代),and the 39th generation of Huayen School(華嚴宗第三十九傳傳人).
