  1. Tuesday, Sept 2 Bell Ringer- Think of one interesting thing you know about Texas. Don’t write, we’ll discuss it.

  2. In your composition book. Add the next page “Unit 1” • Include Vocabulary List • - Region – an area of the earth with common characteristics (features, climate, vegetation, etc.) • Artifact - An object produced or shaped by human craft, especially a tool, weapon, or ornament of archaeological or historical interest • On the next page, create the below chart (SIDEWAYS): We will complete the Mountains and Basin Region together

Mountains and Basins Region - Characteristics • Westernmost part of the state of Texas • Contains both Texas national parks; Guadalupe Mountains and Big Bend • Several mountain ranges • Much of the region is desert, with little rainfall • Plants include: cacti, mesquite trees and other dessert plants and flowers • Some mountains do get enough rainfall to support forests • Rio Grande is the key river in the region • Climate: hot days, cold nights; hot short summers and cold winters • Human characteristics: cattle, sheep and goat ranching; tourism to Parks • Cities include: El Paso, Van Horn, Ft. Davis, Marfa, Marathon, Alpine, Presidio

  5. Small Group Activity – Adding MR LIP foldable to your composition book. M – Movement (travel from place to place and exchange of goods and services) R – Region (similar physical characteristics and cultural traits) L – Location (latitude and longitude, as well as relation to other places) I – Interaction (people adapt to environment and people change environment) P – Place (physical features and human features)

  6. Closure – Complete MR LIP at home, if you have not already done so.

  11. Now, work in pairs to complete your 4 regions chart using your textbook (pages 18-22)

  12. Closure On a piece of paper (not from your book) match the region name to the description. Description to match to region name Contains beaches, piney woods and prairie grass Contains prairie grass, buttes, mesas, rolling hills and Ft. Worth Contains Amarillo, Palo Duro Canyon and broad flat plains Western-most part of state, dry desert, Big Bend and El Paso Region Name Mountains and Basins Coastal Plain North Central Plains Great Plains

  19. Closure- On a piece of your paper (not in book), pick one region you would like to live in and write a 4 to 6 sentence paragraph on why you would want to live there. Homework – study the maps in your composition book.
