  1. Civic Virtue Tyler Tigges, Luke Umana, Tristan Rivers, Jimmy Scaletty

  2. Definition • Morality or a standard of righteous behavior in a relationship to a citizen’s involvement in society. • Spiritual Virtue- mandated by a higher being • Civil Virtue- follows the laws and customs of a city.

  3. Historic Example • Hurricane Katrina • Greatest example of philanthropy in American society • Communities from all over nation came together to help those in need.

  4. Tupac • Tupac Amaru Shakur (June 16, 1971 - September 13, 1996) was an influential, best-selling hip hop artist, considered by many to be the greatest rapper of all time. • Surrounded by violence and crime from a young age

  5. Euphanasia • Company founded by Tupac to help under-privileged youth • Funded by Tupac’s celebrity fundraisers and other rappers • Set up a youth baseball league in California where the participants had to be drug and crime free • Plans to set up free concerts for students with B grade average or higher • Phone line for troubled teens

  6. Civic Works • Handed out turkeys to less fortunate families with Suge Knight every Thanksgiving • Joshua’s Dream • Attempts to end feud between East/West Coast

  7. Lyrical Content • Wrote many songs pushing for political change and social equality • First rap he ever wrote was about gun control • Called for all races to unify as brothers and sisters • Urged fans to follow their dreams • Gave people hope about Heaven • Cruelty of the streets and the necessity to get out of the hood

  8. Support • Mark Anthony Neal’s speech that called Tupac an “organic intellectual” expressing concerns of the group • Professor Mike Dyson said “Tupac spoke with brilliance and insight as someone who bears witness to the pain of those who would never have his platform. He told the truth, even as he struggled with the fragments of his identity.”

  9. Dear Cathedral Students, Many people don’t view me as a good person. I lived a short life, but, honestly, contrary to the common belief, I preformed more good than bad. I made some mistakes in my life, bur if I could go back, I would change everything. I chose to voice my opinions through rap, America looks down on my people, you know, the hip-hop community. They think that we’re all about guns, drugs, and gang violence. Well it ain’t like that. I have given something to my people that is way more special and important than amount of money. I have given my people hope and I have pushed for love and social reform. I have shown that you don’t have to be corporate bigwig to be a philanthropist. Money can be spent, but words live forever. Livin’ real on the Westside, Tupac Amaru Shakur

  10. Society Without Civic Virtue • Less likely to look beyond their own family, friends, and economic interests. • Less likely to help others in the community • Less likely to give money to nonprofit organizations • Less likely to volunteer • Less likely to participate in a group that benefits society
