  1. Welcome to Physics 20 Mr. Hoang

  2. Rules and Expectations • Let’s go over the rules • Make sure you understand the rules & expectations.

  3. Physics 20 Course Outline • Discuss Course Outline – See Handout

  4. What is Physics? • Physics is a branch of science that involves the study of the physical world: energy, matter, and how they are related. • Physicists investigate:

  5. Topics Studied in Physics • Mechanics: Motion, Speed, Acceleration, Rotational Motion, Momentum, Forces, Gravity, Energy and Work • Waves and Light: Mirrors and Lenses, Interference and Diffraction • Electricity and Magnetism • Nuclear Physics – Modern Physics

  6. Careers in Physics • Let us examine the careers that utilize the knowledge of Physics. • http://www.physics.org/careers.asp?contentid=381

  7. meteorology medicine astronomy What are different types of science? biology electricity physics chemistry paleontology

  8. Various Discipline in Science

  9. Keep in mind • New things are always being studied and unravelled in science every day. • Theories, Formulas and Ideas are just Tentative. (Watch Video on E=MC2) • Observation is the most essential part studying science.

  10. SCIENTIFIC METHOD

  11. The scientific method is a set of steps used to gain GOOD information so that you can get GOOD answers

  12. We’ll look at scientific method by figuring out how to answer… Does music affect how fast a plant grows?

  13. 1 PROBLEM Determine what you are trying to figure out

  14. PROBLEM Does music affect how fast a plant grows?

  15. 2 RESEARCH Look up what other people have already figured out

  16. RESEARCH Have other people tried to answer the same question?

  17. 3 HYPOTHESIS Come up with an educated guess of what the answer might be

  18. HYPOTHESIS I think that music does affect plant growth OR I think that music does NOT affect plant growth

  19. 4 EXPERIMENT Design an experiment that will answer your question

  20. EXPERIMENT How would you actually test whether music can affect how plants grow?

  21. 5 ANALYSIS Look at the data from your experiment and see what it tells you about your hypothesis

  22. ANALYSIS How would you measure if the music worked and what might that tell you.

  23. 6 CONCLUSION Use the results from the experiment to make a conclusion

  24. CONCLUSION What would make you conclude that music helps? (this experiment has been done and music DOES affect growth)

  25. If there are TWO switches that control lights in another room, how would you figure out which switch goes to which light in one try.

  26. QUESTION? HYPOTHESIS? EXPERIMENT? CONCLUSION?

  27. If there are THREE switches that control lights in another room, how would you figure out which switch goes to which light in one try.

  28. QUESTION? HYPOTHESIS? EXPERIMENT? CONCLUSION?
