  10. e-Content for Armenia. How to enrich it? • Digitization is the challenge of the 21st century . And Armenian libraries should be amongst the leaders for digitizing of “Written Heritage” and making that content available to all.

  11. e-Content for Armenia. How to enrich it? • 4 most fatal digitization myths are: • Digitization does not need government attention • Digitization is cheap to do and does not cost a lot. • You do it once and that is it. • A whole library can be digitized easily.

  12. e-Content for Armenia. How to enrich it? Myth 1: Digitization does not need government attention . • Three decisions of Armenian Government will help to bypass the “Myth 1”. • “Developing Armenian Libraries union catalogue”. Approval date: 29 Nov., 2012 • “Exalting documents, and including them in the National Library Collection. Approval date: 10 Jan., 2013 • “Organization and Coordination of the digital version of the Armenian script library”. Approval date: 4 Feb., 2013

  13. e-Content for Armenia. How to enrich it? Myth 2: Digitization is cheap to do and does not cost a lot • It is cheap if just photos of the pages are taken. In this case the image quality is low, the photographing speed is slow. • Professional digitizing equipment costs between 50,000 – 60,000 USD. • During one shot the image is passing several processes: cropping, adjustment, sequential numbering, saving in TIFF format, etc. • Trained staff should be involved in this.

  14. e-Content for Armenia. How to enrich it? Myth 3: You do it once and that is it. • For each digitized material relevant metadata must be provided (in MARC21, or in Doublin Core etc formats). • If possible, digitized copies should pass OCR • All solutions (machine readable data exchange, data export/import protocols, data search, retrieval and mining etc) must be based on ISO approved standards in Information Science, Computer Science, Library Science.

  15. e-Content for Armenia. How to enrich it? Myth 4: A whole library can be digitized. • Collections of the National Library of Armenia consist of: • Several million newspaper pages • 4 million book titles (280 million pages???)

  16. e-Content for Armenia. How to enrich it? Problems to be solved • Presenting multilingual content (non Latin scripts) on the Web. • Developing multilingual authority records, multilingual subject heading, geo. locations. • Organizing multilingual search • Preparing indexes of named entities • Developing ‘nice looking’ Web Based UNICODE fonts for Armenian content • Producing content for mobile devices.

  17. e-Content for Armenia. How to enrich it?
