  2. Harding Administration 1. After serving a term in the Senate, WarrenG. Harding won the presidential election of 1920. 2. The nations citizens felt at ease with Harding’s open administration. He promised to return life to what it was before the war.

  3. Harding Administration 3. Harding’s cabinet became known as the Ohio gang. 4. Members of Ohio Gang sold government jobs, pardons, and protection from prosecution. 5. Colonel Charles R. Forbes, head of the Veterans Bureau, sold scarce medical supplies from veterans hospitals and kept 250 million dollars for himself.

  4. Harding Administration 6. Teapot DomeScandal - Secretary of the Interior, Albert B. Fall allowed private interest to lease land holding U.S. Navy oil reserves in Teapot Dome, Wyoming and Elk Hills, California. Fall received bribes totaling over 300,000 dollars. Video Clip 7. Harding died on November 2nd 1923 after taking ill from a probable heart attack while touring the West.

  5. Coolidge Administration 1. Vice President, Calvin Coolidge took office after Harding’s death. 2. Coolidge’s belief that economic growth relied on business leadership and that government should stay out of business helped him win the presidency in 1924.

  6. Policy’s of Prosperity 1. Supply – Side economics- lower taxes & businesses and consumers will spend and invest more money helping the economy grow. Also known as “trickle-down” economics. 2. The United States favored isolationism (U.S. stay out of world affairs) in the 1920s. 3. Dawes Plan was an agreement between the United States, France, Britain and Germany that had the U.S. giving loans to Germany to pay the war reparations.

  7. Trade & Arms Control 1. Secretary of State Charles Evens Hughes addressed eight major nations at the Washington Conference on November 12th, 1921. 2. Hughes proposed a 10 year moratorium, or halt on the construction of warships. 3. This led to the Five-Power Naval Limitation Treaty signed by Britain, France, Italy, Japan, and the U.S.

  8. Abolishing War 3. Kellogg-Briand Pact- called to end war as a way of settling disputes and was signed by the United States and 14 other nations. 4. Overall the U.S. hoped to be an isolationist country however was to big and powerful to do so.
