  8. Your Role as Store Manager • Oversee the operation of the department • Supervise the department manager • Support the companies initiatives and its management staff • Conduct weekly department meetings to communicate feedback on past store performance and future goals – Communication skills are the key to success – Take away the excuses that “nobody told me” or “I always thought…” or “I’ve always done it this way” • If you are not getting the performance out of your staff you need to concentrate on better training practices and with the assistance of the specialists, HR, Bruce and myself.

  9. Key Areas that need addressed • Good orders and good inventories • Portion Control – objectives and results • Buying Practices • Chain of Command – Extremely important • Communications – what works best • Holiday reports • Top 50 items • Walking the Department – from the consumers viewpoint – ALL DAY LONG • Checklists – no department manager is excused for the day until you, the store manager, checks off

  10. More Key Areas to Address • Item Codes – Scales – Pricing • Labeling – universal codes • Scales – keeping them up to date • Pricing – no excuses for not being current on price changes – on the product, in the scale or in the system • Rotation – code dating • Distribution lists – on display in every deli and bakery department • Manager’s meetings • “Plan the work and work the plan” One of most important functions you have as a manager is conducting the weekly store meeting. Teams don’t just happen they are formed.

  11. Next Meeting • August 19 • Topics to cover • Follow up on Deli / Bakery departments • Preparations for the “Tailgate Season” • What are your plans • How are you going to “tackle” the business • What “blocks” will you need to overcome • Which of you is going to make this a winning season • Kehe specialty foods • Produce
