What is a Philanthropic Gift? • A voluntary contribution to a charity (Queen’s University) with no expectations of anything in return • Queen’s University charitable number (BN 10786 8705 RR0001) can only be used to receipt gifts that directly support the University’s primary purpose and activities, including out-of-class learning activities that enhance academic & extra-curricular experience of Queen’s students. • Charitable status is a privilege, not a right. We need to show care & control over how donations are spent.

What is Not a Charitable Gift? • Does not include: • Support of activities not related to Queen’s University • Corporate Sponsorship / Grants • Support of an individual • Contributions of time or services • Tuition / registration / admission fees • Event based fundraising • Purchase of lottery tickets Canadian Revenue Agency - www.cra.gc.ca

  7. Internal Donor Prospects 1) Your club/team members • Participate in the key • Need both time and money • What level of commitment do you and other students have to your cause? • Donations of $5 and up are eligible for a charitable tax receipt • 2) Queen’s Faculty and staff • 3) Parents

Support from Queen’s Alumni Email your club/team Alumni • Acknowledge their involvement with your club/team • Share your fundraising story & ask for their support • Include a quote from a current student • Link to your website • Suggested length - 250 words or less • Send to Brenda Forbes – brenda.forbes@queensu.ca • Attach your logo (if your club has one) • Allow 2 weeks turnaround • Open rates & click-thru’s are tracked

Support from Queen’s Alumni Mail a letter to Alumni • Acknowledge their involvement with your club/team • Share your fundraising story & ask for their support • Include a quote from a current student • Tell donors the impact their gift made • Send to Brenda • Suggest no longer than 1 sheet of paper (2-sided) • Annual giving will supply letterhead, envelopes, gift tickets and postage paid return envelopes • Cost estimate $1 per mailing address • Allow 3 weeks turnaround

  11. Ways Donors can make a Gift • Cash • Cheque – payable to Queen’s University (memo: club/team) • Credit Card – for online giving • Securities • Gifts in Kind/ Material (a detailed advance process) • Legacy Gifts – wills, insurance, annuities Options: Single gift or pledge up to 5 years long

Corporate Sponsorship Corporate Sponsorship = Marketing 100% of a contribution can be written off as a business expense. • Research company’s area of interest / social responsibility • What’s in it for the Company? How many people will they reach? • Suggest $ levels of sponsorships and brand exposure by level • Based on previous years and your budget • Include level of internal support • Queen’s Faculty Development Officers can help open doors • Cheques payable to Queen’s University • Represent Queen’s with a professional approach

Stewardship Tell your donors / sponsors how their gift made a impact. • How were recent donations spent? • How did their support improve the student experience? • What can the team do now that they couldn’t do before? • And why is that better? Brenda will pull a list of your donors and will cover the cost of mailing your thank you cards/letters.

Succession Planning • Share your Year End Report with AMS Clubs Manager and me (Brenda Forbes) • Provide list of student team participants (current and past) • Coding in Advancement Database • For mentorship, reunions and fundraising • Provide list of sponsors, addresses, contacts & contributions • Knowledge of support will ensure Queen’s reputation Send to: Brenda Forbes, brenda.forbes@queensu.ca
