  3. What was a conflict in the play Hansel and Gretel and the Big Woods? Possible answers: • Hansel and Gretel annoyed their stepmother because they repeated their names over and over. • Hansel and Gretel were gullible and believed everything people told them.

  5. Describe the setting in the play Hansel and Gretel and the Big Woods. The setting of the play is like most fairy tales. The time is in the distant past – there are no electricity or modern conveniences mentioned in the story. The place is a woodsy area with meadows and trails. The homes are simple.

  9. B. The fox cannot reach the grapes. This is the main problem in the fable. The fox does love grapes, but that is not the struggle. The fox does say the grapes are sour, but he only says that to cover up the fact that he cannot get to them.

  11. Possible Answer: The author used imagery in the sentence that helped me picture the scene. By saying that it is a hot day, it makes sense that the fox would want to eat the juicy grapes. By saying that the grapes are just ripened, I can picture how they would look and that they are hanging from a very full and high branch which is what caused the conflict to happen. The description of the setting in this sentence helps me understand more about the situation.

  12. One theme for this story is that it is easy to despise what you cannot have. How is this theme developed in the story? This theme is shown in the fable because in the beginning, the fox really wanted the grapes. He tried many times to reach the grapes, but he couldn’t get to them. At the end of the story, the theme is shown when he would rather say the grapes were no good than to admit that he couldn’t reach them. The lesson to take away is it is easier to put something/someone down than to admit your own failure.

This sentence helped me understand what happened to the characters at the end.
