  1. Warm-up We must consume food in order to get energy. List what foods give us the most energy. Evolution Exam corrections due by Friday February 14th Tuesday 2/18 – Biology • Learning Goal • Understand the correlation between photosynthesis and cellular respiration, and describe how they meet the energy needs of both plants and animals • Agenda • Cellular Respiration Notes • Photo vs. Respiration Fodable

  2. Cellular Respiration Energy Unit

  3. Cell Energy • Cells use ATP for energy. • ATP gives a cellenergy to do work. P adenosine P P

  4. ATP • ATP supplies energy needed for cell repair • ATP is the energy that drives metabolic reactions, like working out & digesting food

  5. ATP • ATP stores lots of energy in the bonds between the phosphate groups adenosine P P P Energy is stored here

  6. ATP • When the bond is BROKEN, LOTS of energy is released. ENERGY adenosine P P P

  7. What is Cellular Respiration? • Cellular respiration is a process that changes energy from food into energy for cells.

  8. What is Cellular Respiration? • Organisms take in glucose and oxygen and make energy (ATP) and release carbon dioxide and water.

  9. Cellular respiration is aerobic because it needs oxygen. When cells need more energy, you have to breathe harder to bring in oxygen.

  10. Label the reactants • Label the products Cellular respiration

  11. Cellular Respiration • Word Equation Oxygen Glucose Carbon dioxide Water Energy +  + +

  12. Cellular Respiration • Chemical Equation 6O2 C6H12O6 6CO2 6H2O ATP +  + +

  13. Where does it happen? • Starts in cytoplasm • Finishes in the mitochondria

  14. Cellular Respiration has 3 steps • Glycolysis • Krebs cycle • Electron transport chain

  15. Step One: Glycolysis • Happens in the Cytoplasm • Glucose is split in half, releasing energy. • Energy from the broken bond makes • The two pieces of sugar move to themitochondria to make MORE ATP.

  16. Step Two: Kreb’s Cycle • This happens in the mitochondria • Oxygen is added to help break down the glucose pieces • Energy from the broken bond makes 2

  17. Step Three:Electron Transport Chain • The energy from Glycolysis and the Kreb’s Cycle enters the Electron Transport Chain (ETC). • The electron transport chain moves electrons down an electrochemical gradient to produce ATP. • The Electron Transport Chain produces and water.
