  6. What will happen in the sessions after this one? We will split off into groups dependent on debate experience Each group will have a short training session followed by an 8 person debate with a judge or two After the debate the judges will offer general or specific feedback from the debate they witnessed. Following this the issues are normally discussed more casually, at the pub.

  7. Sorry for the spiel... Here’s what we’re doing now Starter Game How debating works – quick explanation Straight into some mini debates.

  8. Opposition Proposition The Moral Dilemma... Split into groups of 12, divide into lines of 6. The judge will stand in the middle and give you a dilemma. Each person has 20 seconds to persuade the judge to move to their side.

  9. Explanation of what an actual debate is Teams of 2 people, with 4 teams in the debate: 2 teams for each side, proposition and opposition on a motion (what we are debating –THW or THB). The aim of the game is to argue the case for your side better than the 3 other teams in the debate. Each team spends 15 minutes preparing material followed by 5 minute speeches. Each position has a certain role in the debate This style of debate is called British Parliamentary.

  11. Points of Information During the speech of an opposition speaker (excluding the first and last minute) the other side may offer a short point of information. They do this by standing up and saying ‘Point of Information’ or ‘On that point’ or something to that effect. If the speaker wishes they can take the person offering the point of information, but they don’t have to. If they do they should try to respond to the point with an argument in support of their side.

  12. If all that was a bit much... You’re all first timers, but everyone will get better with practise –nobody expects stunning speeches first time! Debating is easy (surprisingly so probably after all that explanation) to pick up – you will be astonished how good you get in such a short time. Come every Wednesday for fresher training. We’re all here to help you get better. I’ll put all the stuff on the web if anyone misses anything.

  13. Mini-Debates!!! Split up into groups of 8 You will have 15 minutes to prepare material for the motion (about to be announced). Try to think of at least 2 points you can discuss in your speech. Speeches will be 3 minutes (Points of Information can be offered between 0:30 and 2:30). This period of ‘unprotected time’ will be signalled by a bang on the table from your chair judge (one of us).
