  3. Field and Power @ NHMFL NHMFL External Advisory Committee August 2010

  4. DC Powered Magnets Worldwide 1Power available for resistive magnets listed 2Magnet presently in development Highest Worldwide NHMFL External Advisory Committee August 2010

  5. Field vs Outer Diameter and Power for 32 mm bore resistive magnets NHMFL External Advisory Committee August 2010

  6. Operations Building • Alongside OPMD Even Cells • 3 Floors ~13000 SqFt • Frees Up Cells 10 and 11 • Pits for mK magnets , low vibration area for low temperature STM NHMFL External Advisory Committee August 2010

  7. Visionfor the DC Field User Program • All “workhorse” resistive magnets upgraded to 28 MW {2.8M$ first, 6.4M$ for 4} 40-42 T (32 mm bore) 36-38T (50 mm bore) • Series Connected Hybrid (14 MW) – 36T high homogeneity insert {11.7 M$} • 40T high field insert for Series Connected Hybrid {1 M$} • Power supply active filter upgrade 28→32MW to replace unobtainable components and reduce ripple,Magnet Cooling pump & heat exchanger for 28/32 MW operation {2.3 M$} • Plant infrastructure upgrade/replacements, Chillers (due 2018 - freon) {$5M} • Superconducting magnet operational at 32T with 10 mK dilution refrigerator, other SC magnets being made or purchased. {5 M$ ?} • Hybrid magnet outsert being upgraded to 15 T giving 48 T total field {2 M$ ?}, 2 Power Supply Operation • Proposal for 60 T hybrid being developed {100 M$} • New “standard” instrumentation heat capacity, dilatometry, scanning probe microscopy {1 person / technique} • Standard instrumentation on “PPMS like” pucks allowing remote operation and measurements, these could be run in a 3rd shift. {1 technician + 1 control room operator} • New “Operations Building” adjacent to OPMD with low vibration area for low temp STM and magnet, pits for mK magnets, equipment and cryo storage, lab space, offices, cryo operators, and bathroom {$6M ??} as of summer 2010, mid-point in current award period
