  2. Affable - ADJ • Easily approachable; warm friendly • Judges at beauty contests often choose one of the contestants as the most affable.

  3. Affirmation - Noun • Declaring something to be true; positive statement • Reciting the Pledge of Allegiance is an affirmation of our loyalty to our country.

  4. Aggregate - ADJ • Total • The Roman Empire was an aggregate of many states under the Emperor.

  5. Alleviate - Verb • Relieve • The United Nations is working to alleviate poverty in the world.

  6. Aloof - ADV • Apart; reserved • Shy individuals usually like to remain aloof in large gatherings of people.

  7. Altruistic - ADJ • Unselfishly generous; concerned for others • Many people are attracted to teaching for altruistic reasons rather than financial ones.

  8. Ambiguous - ADJ • Unclear or doubtful in meaning • When writing an essay, try to avoid making ambiguous statements.

  9. Ambivalence - Noun • Having contradictory or conflicting emotional attitudes • Joan was attracted to Ted, so she finally agreed to a date with him; however, she did so with some ambivalence because of his reputation for being self-centered.

  10. Amorphous - ADJ • Formless; lacking shape or definition • This essay is so amorphous that it isn’t possible to determine its main argument.

  11. Analogous - ADJ • Comparable • The heart of an animal or a person is analogous to a pump.

  12. Anarchist - Noun • A person who seeks to overturn the established government; a person who favors abolishing authority • Anarchists generally believe that governments infringe on rights that human beings enjoy naturally.

  13. Animosity - Noun • Bitter hostility; active hatred • The once friendly competition between the two rivals for Bella’s love has turned into fierce animosity.
