  2. 6th grade English/Language Arts • Emphasis on reading strategies through use of short stories, novels, poetry, and nonfiction pieces • Enhancing writing through essays, narratives, journals, poems, and constructed response questions • Focus on punctuation, sentence structure, and grammar skills • Ongoing reinforcement of skills, including point of view, summarizing, plot, main idea, and figurative language

  3. 7th grade English/Language Arts • Integrates reading, writing, listening, speaking, and technology skills. • Read authors such as S.E. Hinton and Lois Lowry. • A variety of writing will be covered including expository pieces and friendly and business letters • Persuasive techniques and research skills are emphasized.

  4. 7th grade English/Language Arts- Challenge • Integrates reading, writing, listening, speaking, and technology skills. • Read authors such as S.E. Hinton and George Orwell • A variety of writing will be covered including expository pieces, character analysis, memoirs. • Research skills are emphasized.

  5. 8th Grade English/Language Arts • Integrates reading, writing, listen, speaking, and language • Read a variety of short stories and novels byauthors such as O Henry, Edgar Allan Poe, and Amy Tan. • Analysis a variety of poetry and nonfiction material • Focus on writing narrative essays, informational essays, and research.

  6. 8th grade English/Language Arts-Challenge • Prepares for Honors high school English • Increased focus literary analysis through essays • Evaluate poetry and literature • In addition to authors read in regular, Challenge students will also study Lorraine Hansberry and other authors • Independent thinkers & motivated students

  7. Requirements for Challenge ELAments • Reading above grade level • Advanced on the MAP test • Teacher Recommendation • B- or higher • 90% assignment completion
