  1. INFO100 and CSE100 Fluency with Information Technology Course ConclusionsWe're all fluent now, right? Katherine Deibel Katherine Deibel, Fluency in Information Technology

  2. My humblest apologies • I totally did not get the slides up on time for today • Even though I finished them before bed last night • I even told myself to post them • I am such a lousy instructor • 0.5pts extra credit for everyone! Katherine Deibel, Fluency in Information Technology

  3. As seen on March 26, 2012 Fluency with IT? FIT100 teaches you to be Fluent with IT What does that mean for you? • Using IT freely and easily • Making technology your friend • Recovering from bugs, errors, or unexpected situations • Being in control and confident… now and in the future Katherine Deibel, Fluency in Information Technology

  4. As seen on March 26, 2012 Is FIT100 for You? • Take FIT100 if you want to… • learn applications & the science of IT • prepare for a lifetime of expanding your use of IT • and if you are willing to … • think and study intensively • attend all lectures and labs • devote “5 credits” of study time this term Katherine Deibel, Fluency in Information Technology

  5. We looked at a lot of topics… • Computer basics, CPUs, and silicon • Web Pages: HTML, CSS, and Validation • Building web apps/forms in HTML/JavaScript • The DOM • Programming: Functions, Variables, Iteration • Digital Media: Binary, Metadata, Hexadecimal • Database Basics: Operations, Queries, Design • Netiquette, viruses, worms, and spam • Privacy: Opt-in or Opt-out Katherine Deibel, Fluency in Information Technology

  6. A whole lotta topics… • Search Engines and Searching • Misinformation and Critical Evaluation • Plagiarism and Online Intellectual Property • When Computers Go Bad • Debugging • Accessibility and assistive technology • Snapshots of computing history • Security and Encryption • Algorithms, efficiency, limits of computing Katherine Deibel, Fluency in Information Technology

  7. What we did not cover • Development tools for HTML, JavaScript • PHP, ASP, Wikis, Flash, Moodle, etc. • Digital divide: Economic and Political • E-waste, Computer Recycling, Etc. • Productivity and technology • Computer graphics and animation • Educational technologies • So much more in spreadsheets Katherine Deibel, Fluency in Information Technology

  8. The Challenge—Your Diversity • Being fluent in information technology means different things for each of you • Depends on your major • Depends on your career goals • Depends on your interests • There are 149 of you (≈120 in lecture ) • 149 different interests and goals • Hopefully you had chances to learn from each other (while respecting academic conduct) Katherine Deibel, Fluency in Information Technology

  9. What we aimed for instead • FIT100 aimed to help you to become Fluent by learning • Skills • Concepts • Capabilities Katherine Deibel, Fluency in Information Technology

  10. Skills • Skills are the ability to use computers today to solve your problems • You have learned new applications … FTP, GIMP, Spreadheets, Access, … • Even better, you learned how to learn applications: “Click Around,” “Blaze Away” • Be an aggressive, confident user • Could you learn your next application on your own? Katherine Deibel, Fluency in Information Technology

  11. Concepts • Concepts are foundation for future learning • How the Internet’s TCP/IP works (postcards) • how a computer works (F/E cycle), • how JavaScript can make dynamic Web pages • And privacy, netiquette, DB queries, etc, • What is the future of technology? • We don't know, but it will be familiar to what currently exists • We will continue to see common, shared concepts in any new technology Katherine Deibel, Fluency in Information Technology

  12. Capabilities • The most ambitious goal of this class is to expand your thinking • Reasoning, finding information, debugging, designing pages or databases, problem solving, expecting the unexpected,… • It’s not easy to learn these things … • Was debugging ever fun??? • All capabilities useful beyond computing! Katherine Deibel, Fluency in Information Technology

  13. Applying Fluency • In the coming years you will apply knowledge from this class • Perhaps it will be programming • Perhaps it will be talking with a tech person at work or at school • Perhaps it will be figuring out why your computer is being a total @*!! Katherine Deibel, Fluency in Information Technology

  14. What's next? • This course might have inspired some interest in information technologies • If it did not, remember this • This is a digital society now • Using technologies well is an expected competency, especially for younger folks Katherine Deibel, Fluency in Information Technology

  15. Technology Majors at UW • Lots to choose from Katherine Deibel, Fluency in Information Technology

  16. Computer Science • Computer aspects of IT • Increasing emphasis on mobile devices • Emphasis on computer systems • Networks, operating systems, etc. • Lots of programming but its also about software and system design • Some human-computer interaction work, but emphasis on the COMPUTER Katherine Deibel, Fluency in Information Technology

  17. Computer Engineering • Blend of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering • More of an emphasis on hardware • Involves classes from both departments • Relatively new major here at UW Katherine Deibel, Fluency in Information Technology

  18. Informatics • iSchool: UW School of Information • Historical emphasis on library science • Has adapted to increasing changes in role of technology in managing information • Focus on: • Managing and organizing data • How people use information systems • Emphasis on HUMAN part of HCI Katherine Deibel, Fluency in Information Technology

  19. HCDE • Human-Centered Design & Engineering • Historically was the technical communications department • Variety of engineering topics involving humans and technology • Emphasis on the engineering design aspects of IT Katherine Deibel, Fluency in Information Technology

  20. DXArts • The art side of technology • Some of it is art for art's sake • Use of technology in new forms of interactive art or production • Some of it is about exploring what is possible and coming up with ideas • Example: simulating the airplane cockpit of tomorrow Katherine Deibel, Fluency in Information Technology

  21. Further Options • Some majors have IT-related specializations: e.g., Business Information Systems • Single Courses • Can always petition to take a major course • Some departments offer non-major classes related to IT • Special workshop type courses on programming • Tutorials through the library Katherine Deibel, Fluency in Information Technology

  22. Some last details Due dates, grading, extra credit, evaluations, etc. Katherine Deibel, Fluency in Information Technology

  23. Regarding Grading • This course is not curved (classically) • No lowering your grade relative to others • All students may be adjusted up • Any changes will be net positives • Rounding of grades • I tend to round down to the nearest tenth • I do look at each student's progress throughout the term when deciding how to best round Katherine Deibel, Fluency in Information Technology

  24. Extra Credits • Project 3B is due on Tuesday, June 5 by 10pm… No late turn-ins! • Extra credit for early turn-in • 4pts if by Monday, June 4 at 10pm • 6pts if by Sunday, June 3 at 10pm • 8pts if by Saturday, June 2 at 10pm • 10pts if by Friday, June 1 at 10pm • This requires both your dropbox files and your quiz submission to meet the deadlines Katherine Deibel, Fluency in Information Technology

  25. Extra Credit Gamble • The following question has 8 answers • Each has a hidden point value • Three are 1s • Two are 3s • One is a 4 • One is a 6 • One is a 10 • The class will earn as extra credit the weighted distribution of your answers Katherine Deibel, Fluency in Information Technology
