  2. Description • Spores of bacteria live in soil • May remain inactive in the soil, but still infectious. • Infection comes when these spores enter your body through a wound. • Mostly found in humans

  3. The Attack • Spores release bacteria that spread and make a poison called tetanospasmin. • Poison blocks nerve signals from spinal cord to muscles. • Causes muscle spasms.

  4. Treatment • Preventable through 5 vaccinations. • Treatment includes: • Antibiotics • Bedrest • Medicine to reverse poison • Muscle relaxers • Surgery

  5. How Common? • Rare because of vaccinations • If untreated causes death in 60% • Only 50-100 people become infected in the U.S. • Most dangerous for pregnant • Over 270,000 die worldwide due to neonatal tetanus
