Explain the menstruation process. • Beginning of flow is day # 1 - the lining breaks down • 1st to 5th day is average menstrual flow • 5th to 14th day – lining repairs itself • Around the 14th day – Ovulation. • 16th to 28th day – Lining of uterus thickens with blood. • (Last day begins the breakdown to start the next cycle.)

Explain how the HIV virus destroys the body’s defense system. • Same as normal immune system, but HIV gets inside the T cell and reproduces rapidly • B cells produce antibodies, but they can’t attack the virus once it is in the T cell • HIV multiplies inside the T cell and the T cell explodes, releasing more viruses in bloodstream • Eventually, there are no T cells left to fight off the most common infections • Person dies of Opportunistic Infections such as: Pneumonia, meningitis, Kaposi’s sarcoma
