  1. HPV/Genital Warts

  2. Genital Warts • Genital warts are caused by the human papillomavirus, commonly called HPV. • Genital warts are contracted during vaginal, anal or oral sex with someone who is infected with HPV. • Symptoms of the virus can show up weeks to months after contact with HPV. • Someone who has HPV but doesn’t have warts can still transmit HPV to sexual partners.

  3. Symptoms • Small, bumpy, cauliflower-like warts on the sex organs, the anus and the mouth. • Itching and burning around the penis, vagina, testicles and anus.

  4. Treatment • Because genital warts are caused by a virus, there is no cure. • The warts can be treated and removed usually by freezing with liquid nitrogen or burning them with acid. • If not treated and removed, the warts can grow and spread.

  5. Remember • It is important to remember that even though warts have been removed, the virus is still in the person’s body. • This means that the warts can come back and the person can still spread the disease.

  6. One Last Fact • HPV is the leading cause of cervical cancer in addition to other less common cancers such as cancer of the vulva, vagina, anus and penis.
