  2. What are they? • Greek pyrrhos- meaning flames phyton- meaning plant • Free-Swimming Protists unicellular eukaryotic microorganisms • Occur in marine ecosystems, but some are in fresh waters.

  3. >Reproduce in such great numbers that the water may appear red, producing a "red tide” and blooms >Produce Neurotoxins Common Name Fire Algae >Emit bright flashes of light which at night looks like fire on the ocean's surface. . Dinoflagellate “Whirling whips” Motility: Forward Spiraling swimming motion

  4. Structure Two unequal lateral flagellas (transverse flagellum is more complicated than longitudinal) Nucleus with condensed chromosomes, Chloroplasts Vacuole Mitochondria Golgi bodies

  5. Cell wall structure • Cell wall absent in some • Cell wall = Theca (inside cell membrane) • Heavy overlapping plates of cellulose • Longitudinally orientated groove called the Sulcus • Other groove- Cingulum

  6. Pigments 1. chlorophyll a/c (blue-black)(brown pigments)2. xanthophylls-diadinoxanthin (yellow pigments) 3. Alpha-beta carotene (orange pigments)

  7. Importance • Important component of Ocean Plankton • Marine Food chain • Bioluminscent • Neurotoxins --- • bio-warfare weapons • serious threats to the ecosystems and human society.  Can kill fish and consumers and may suffer from reproductive problems and neurological problems. • Ciguatera – from eating affected fish http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OUeAMzoKNWg
