  3. Unicellular Algae • 4 phyla of unicellular algae: • 1)Euglenophyta • 2)Chrysophyta • 3)Bacillariophyta • 4)Pyrrophyta

  4. Euglenophytes • Phylum Euglenophyta • Have 2 flagella • No cell wall • Example: Euglena

  5. Chrysophytes • Phylum Chrysophyta • Golden algae • Have golden colored chloroplasts • Store food in the form of oil

  6. Diatoms • Phylum Bacilliariophyta • Thin delicate cell walls rich in Si (silicon) • Cell walls are 2 sided like a petri dish • Diatomaceous earth: used in toothpaste, reflective, and cleansers • All live in salt water

  7. Dinoflagellates • Belong to phylum Pyrrophyta • Use 2 flagella • most are photosynthetic • Covered by cellulose plates • Many are bioluminescent • Cause “red tide”

  8. Ecology of Unicellular Algae • Important part of water ecosystems • Make up much of the phytoplankton that serve as the basis of food chains in water environments • Produce O2 • Algal blooms may deplete water of nutrients and oxygen (red tide)
