In fact, papaya is the fifth-most important commercial plant in India. Papaya plants are usually sown during spring (February to March), monsoon (June to July) and autumn (October to November). These perennial plants grow throughout the year.

  3. The Right Way of Watering • Papayas have leaves that are large in size and soft in texture. In warmer climates, a lot of water evaporates through them. That’s why it’s important to supply sufficient water to your plants, especially during the initial growing stages. • However, over watering is also a major issue that can lead to root rot. This issue often occurs during colder seasons when evaporation levels subside.  • Moreover, papayas are very sensitive to water-logging that may occur due to heavy rainfall in non-porous soils. In such cases, it’s better to choose a slightly sloped field as opposed to a perfectly leveled one. • Make an appropriate watering plan based on the prevailing climate and soil conditions to help your plants grow in the best possible manner.

  4. Wind Protection • Papayas are susceptible to heavy wind and often break under duress. This is because they are tender and shallow-rooted. Windbreakers are a must if you intend to maintain a papaya orchard. First, identify the direction from which wind flows into your field and subsequently, plant a protective boundary of windbreak trees.This also helps prevent the damage caused by soil erosion in the long run. • Manure and Fertilizers • Heavy doses of manure and fertilizers are required for papayas. As the plant matures, the size of application needs to increase correspondingly. It’s been noticed that nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium go a long way when it comes to promoting growth and realizing better yields. Each plant should be ideally given around 20 to 25 kg of farm manure at least once a year. • It’s recommended to supply around 400 g of nitrogen and potassium and around 250 g of phosphorus in six split applications while maintaining optimal irrigation.

  5. Combating Pests and Diseases • Due to the papaya plant’s vulnerability to a wide variety of pests and diseases, it’s important to take a preventive stance while growing papayas.
