  1. Solutions and mixtures

  2. Solubilityexperiment

  3. Can anything change solutions? Solubility is the ability of the solvent (water) to dissolve the solute (sugar). • Factors that affect solubility: • Temperature: The higher it is, it can dissolve more solid materials (sugar) and less gas (carbon dioxide). • Pressure: When you increase the surrounding pressure, you can usually dissolve more gases in the liquid. (e.g. soda can). • Substance structure: Some things dissolve easier in one kind of substance than another (e.g. sugar in water ; oil in water ).

  4. Let’stake a quiz! 1) Whichoneis a mixture?

  5. Let’stake a quiz! 2) Whichdiagramrepresentsanhomogenous mixture?

  6. Let’stake a quiz! 3) Are allsolutions mixtures? Yes!!!!!! 4) Are all mixtures solutions? No!!!!

  7. Let’stake a quiz! 5) A solution is defined as a mixture that is... A) Homologous B) Heterogeneous C) Homogeneous

  8. Let’stake a quiz! 6) Which of these is a solution? A) 14K Gold B) Salt Water C) Carbonated Water D) All of the Above

  9. There are THREE types of mixtures: SOLUTIONS COLLOIDS SUSPENSION Anhomogenous mixture. Particles are large and settleout, unlessthe mixture isstirredconstantly. look like solutions, but their particles are too small to settle to the bottom of their container.

  10. COLLOIDS • Heterogenous. • DO NOT separateonstanding. • Scatter light---- Tyndalleffect.

  11. E.g.milk.

  12. SUSPENSION • Heterogenous. • Particlessettleout. • Mayscatter light, but are nottransparent. • E.g.Sand and water.
