  1. Intellectual Merit: New Conjugated Polymers Based on BenzobisazolesMalika Jeffries-EL, Iowa State University, DMR 0846607 Our research program focuses on the development of new solution processible organic semiconductors with tunable energy levels as a function of structural modification. We have synthesized new monomers based on benzobisazoles and have used these novel building blocks, for the synthesis of emissive electron accepting polymers for use in organic light emitting diodes and narrow band gap materials for use in polymer solar cells. Recently we have determined that the energy levels of benzobisoxazoles are readily tuned through substitution. Using simple chemistry we can now synthesize materials with diverse properties. 2. Educational ActivitiesMalika Jeffries-EL, Iowa State University, DMR 0846607 • Outreach to local schools. • To increase interest in polymer science within students in grades 8-12, I have developed a new outreach effort called the Chemistry Ambassadors program in partnership with ISU’s precollege program Science Bound (SB). • Graduate Education • Brian Tlach who is supported by this grant was the recipient of the ISU Chevron Phillips Fellowship. • Jared Mike who was supported by this grant completed his Ph.D in September 2012. • Jeremy Intemann who was supported by this grant recently won the Iowa State University Award for Research Excellence. He completed his Ph.D in April 2012. This year a group of URM high school students visited ISU for Sciencebound Saturday, a day long event in which to students meet with current faculty and students. Several polymer demonstrations were performed for the group, including a hands on activity.
