Legality - Tim Consumers were used to sharing CD’s and even ripping them onto separate computers The rise of manageable mp3 files meant music could be shared for free and this impacted profits for the industry Music files are legally not owned by the consumer but licensed File sharing P2P programs allowed free access to download music on a large scale Notably the RIAA imposed severe legal cases for random users of these programs and the organisations behind them The organisations claimed ignorance of the files on their network as a legal defence Napster and Limewire shutdown from pressure from record labels, PirateBay and other music file databases are under similar pressure to close Napster has moved on to a successful legal business model
