Compatibility with peripherals • The portable mp3 player first appeared in 1998, along the same time as media players, as a result of increase in digitisation. • Media players allows customers to export their purchased music onto external peripherals • Competitive comparison – compatibility with various file formats and ability to convert these formats There are some common files with the key players Difference – the additional ‘bonus file’ formats • Napster is unable to support any file formats from PCs or CDs, only mp3. • Spotify has a limited selection • Windows Media Player & Winamp largest choice • iTunes is only able to transfer music to iPods & iPhones
